Husband had his 6 biopsies done and had a bone scan on Wednesday . I contacted the specialist nurse (as we sat in traffic for hours trying to get home ). To ask for early morning appts as he seems to be exhausted . Think it’s just overwhelming as he’s actually never been in hospital . She said all appts are afternoons but IF he has to see the oncologist he can bee seen at the local hospital . So do you not automatically see a consultant ?  We have lots of questions regarding optional  treatment . As we believe if you have radiotherapy you cannot have the prostrate removed at a later time . Can anyone advise ?  Had anyone used vitamins for the prostrate , were they any good ?

  • Hi

That is true, surgery after Radiotherapy very difficult, can be done but you'd need a specialist surgeon with lots of experience of doing just that and also potentially more side effects.

Vitamins always worth taking but I concentrated more on cutting down on sugar and have got to the point where I eat virtually none, obviously still eat fruit , natural sugars.

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • Thank you for your reply . We have been eating a very healthy diet for over 6 years as he was diagnosed with Type 2 and it’s been in remission for 4 years after loosing over 6 stones in weight . So plenty fruit , veg & pulses . Meat once a week and the rest it’s chicken & fish . The only thing is a fruit slice once a week so can’t complain . Was looking at Bens Natural Health vitamins but don’t know if it’s one of those faddy things.

  • Hi Johnam

i can help you with one question, if you want to see the consultant, when you go to reception say you want to see the consultant and most hospitals will oblige.

    good luck and best wishes

    Tony

  • Ah thank you much appreciated . Maybe we are old fashioned but for a nurse to tell you over the phone that you have cancer then meet her in person to tell you treatment I find quite odd

  • Hi johnham

Yes once I had my biopsy and scans I did see my consultant following.

It can be very overwhelming once you have been told that you have Cancer especially if you are a Man"

Please please ask us any questions that you have regarding any treatments???

Yes other members will answer your question about Radiotherapy and Prostate Removal shortly.

They will also help you with your question regarding vitamins and how good they are.

Please please let me know if you need any further help/support???

    Prostate Worrier.

  • Hello

Thank you for posting. I understand your anxiety but - it's one step at a time  - so

    * He needs his biopsy results before any treatment plan will be given.

    * Once he has his results from the bone scan and biopsy there will be an MDT meeting at the hospital between urology and oncology to work out his treatment plan. - you will be invited in to hear the options and ask any questions.

    * Healthy eating and a good diet is great.

    * You need to ask you team before you start taking any supplements / vitamins.

    * I would wait on your husbands diagnosis before worrying about issues such as radiotherapy / surgery - however it's normal for surgery not to happen after radiotherapy.

I hope the above helps - please come back to me with any specific questions.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thank you . Yes it’s overwhelming  I just can’t stop crying having been together 57 years married 52 .

  •  Thank you Brian , yes you are being very helpful . my concern as THE. Nurse said she will explain everything and IF he needs to see an oncologist it will be at our local hospital . She doesn’t have a clue about him as he is  a very fit man for his age . He’s still walking albeit only 10 m rather than the usual 15 m a day .  So I just feel she categorising him as an over 70.

  • Hello

The treatment plan will involve his consultant and you have the right to see him - I have met mine several times and he's a great guy. I have also had treatments given by junior members of his team and I am more than happy with the care.

Keeping fit is important as whatever treatment plan is given - fatigue will be lurking.

Amazing to be together for so long - it's better than me and Mrs Millibob as we have been together 47 years - married 45 - I think she's a "keeper".

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Johnam,

Brian - Millibob is spot on. This is one step at a time. Our oncologist consultant said in our first meeting: It is not a sprint it is a marathon.

All the results should come in before any plan is proposed. Within the next few weeks all the results will be back and then your husband will start the treatment. It might be that the urologist will not be relevant any more ( as in our case) and your team will be with oncology.

The specialist nurses are very helpful and useful in term of chasing results, chasing appointments etc.

Currently you are in the worse period of this marathon. It is all so terrifying. When all the results come in and the MDT will meet on that, you will be invited and you will have the plan. When the treatment start the anxiety is slowly lifting and life become almost normal again.

6 months ago I was where you are now. We are both much more relax now and just living our life plus the treatment.

Just take a big breath and enjoy the day together. This the best day of the long weekend weather wise.

    With lots of love

    Dafna
