Using Viagra whilst on chemo treatment?

Hi, I'm new here. I was diagnosed with metastasized prostate cancer (spread to the spine) about 6 months ago and currently having chemo treatment (completed 5 cycles out of 6). I've wondered recently if its safe to use Viagra whilst on chemo treatment. When I searched on the internet I was surprised to find numerous articles relating to how combining chemo with Viagra can be beneficial in improving the effectiveness of chemo. Does anyone out there have any knowledge/experience about this? Many  thanks in advance. Ian.

  • Hello lacly58 Ian

A warm welcome and thank you for the post. I hope that you have not found the chemotherapy too bad so far and well done for getting through to near the end.

I think the answer to your question is - ask your doctor. At the moment the advice is to wear a condom for a week following chemo because you excrete the drug out of every orifice for a few days and need to protect your partner, but also there has been insufficient testing done on the possible increased cytotoxicity when a combination of Viagra and Docetaxel are used. I have had a quick scan of the literature and there is a lot of interesting work being done in repurposing drugs to improve cancer treatment. From what I have read, the trials in mice are hopeful and this has now been extrapolated into the first human trials for different types of cancer but still needs to go through further work to assess the dosage and most effective mode of delivery. It is definitely looking as if it is one for the future and hopefully not too distant. For other nerds like me, I have attached an interesting paper on the subject.

Please come back with any questions.

  • Hi Alwayshope,

Thank you for your helpful and informative reply. Thank you also for the link although I'm not sure you need to be a nerd to understand the report, moreover you need a degree in rocket science Sweat smile. More seriously I did get the gist of it and it does sound like this could be a most promising example of drug repurposing.

    Thanks again.

  • Hi Lacly58

I just asked my daughter this, ( vet ) She said they use viagra to lower the blood pressure in the lungs of animals . So maybe  blood pressure thing ? When you find out let us know.

  • I've e been diagnosed with cancer in my spine and prostate. I'm waiting for my treatment

Nothing works down stairs for me .I had a capsule but in my stomach

It's a hormone thing  but I've around my backside.is this normal .regards Michael

  • Good evening Michael.

Are you still in hospital? It sounds as if you have had a hormone implant in your stomach but was this the first one or have you had it before? These injections are the start of your treatment and should put the cancer cells into hibernation until the next stage of your treatment can be organised.

I am not sure what the problem with your backside is, can you tell us a little more and then maybe we can help you. Come back to us soon.

  • Hi Ian,

I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I’ve been through chemotherapy myself, and during that time, I often used Viagra to help with erectile dysfunction. In my experience, Viagra can be safe to use alongside chemotherapy, but it’s crucial to discuss this with your healthcare provider first. They can assess your specific situation and any potential interactions with your treatment. However, it is also important to use only high-quality Viagra from reliable pharmacies for the best effect.

Some studies suggest that Viagra may even have benefits during chemotherapy, such as improving blood flow and possibly enhancing treatment efficacy. However, everyone's situation is different, so it's important to get personalized advice. Stay strong, and I wish you the best with your treatment!

    Take care,
    Kadyy
