Hi
my husband was recently diagnosed and is having hormone therapy. Injections and has taken xtandi for last 4 weeks
I am feeling quite desperate as he is really struggling. We had to visit a and e last week due to pains in chest which seems to be acid reflux. His blood pressure has spiked and now taking bp meds too.
We are feeling rather alone as the cancer hospital have not returned our calls as promised and he was told to stop taking Xtandi by the 24 hour helpline. They said hospital would return call the next day but they didn’t. He has continued on Xtandi as we have telephone consultation with consultant this week. He is getting anxiety and is up and down with moods, he is stubborn and won’t call the 24 hour helpline again - but I see his point there doesn’t seem to be help there as I rang it twice last week.
Has anyone else had anxiety with Xtandi, I’ve also read that omeprazole sometimes does not work properly with Xtandi …. I thought we would have more support from the hospital
I can’t tell what your details are about your husbands treatment plan except the HT pills. I wonder if that’s for a month until he gets Zoladex injections every month or three months (like I’m on).
I hear your worries and understand the frustration the lack of communication from your team.
I’ve filled out my profile (like other forum members in similar situations) which might help you with the situation your husband might be in but on the other hand it could be very different. I would ask you to consider adding a few facts on your profile that you’re comfortable with sharing, to allow readers to have a better view of your current status. Then there will be more focused replies to help you both.
This is a couples disease and you will have as many questions as your hubby so ask away.
I have had anxiety issues since my diagnosis of stage 4 prostate cancer that had progressed and metastasised into my pelvis ribs and spine. Drug side effects have caused flushes and constipation and all sorts of issues but the biggest issue is in my head. I’ve struggled at times and my mental health is most affected by no news, bad news, pain and worrying about absolutely everything.
If you’ve not yet got the contact details for your specialist cancer nurse then ask for them. Once you get a way through the armour the consultants are wrapped in you will be less stressed.
I don’t know if there’s any bad interactions between the omeprazole and the Enzalutamide (Xtandi®) but you can ask your pharmacy or cancer nurse or GP about that. My amateur reading about the two drugs suggests that a dose increase might be assessed for your omeprazole but don’t quote me on that.
I wish I could help you more, but I would say that being patient is the hardest thing to bare. Hang in there and ask away on this forum, because someone here has already been on the path you are on.
Hi Carole, I'm also T4. and I've been on HT 3 monthly injections, Prostap3, for 38 months. and Xtandi months, alongside BP meds, Solifenacin, which I've been on for a few years and am familiar with acid reflux, which was sorted with Lansoprazole.
Can I ask are you on Alendronic acid, as this can cause lower GI problems too, which manifest as heart pain sometimes, as for anxiety, I think it's to be expected at times in our situation, but you do find a way to live your life and keep it to a minimum.
As for the lack of response from your hospital team, sadly it's not unusual but it is unacceptable, I would be contacting PALS, patient advice and liason service, to talk to your team, telling them the stress and anxiety this situation is putting you through, at an already very difficult time.
Please don't come off your HT treatment, unless your oncologist says so.
best wishes
Eddie xx
Thank you for your reply it’s much appreciated. My husband has had severe acid reflux for years but it got under control with omeprozole and he is on the highest dose.
he takes celocoxib which is an anti inflammatory but not on bone meds as yet.
i haven’t heard of PALS but will ask more questions when we have a telephone call with the consultant this week. I think the feeling of being really unwell could be due to his BP as he didn’t suffer with BP prior to hormone therapy
Hi Carole, you are welcome my friend, and it's good his acid reflux is under control, so IF hubby's offered bisphosphonates, please be aware the tablet option can cause problems with your GI tract, and his hypertension needs investigating asap as it can become a serious issue, and best wishes with your consultation, maybe mention PALS, and definitely, your dissatisfaction with your aftercare.
Eddie xx
