My husbands cancer was found through a CT scan for his heart. He has stage 4 prostate which has metastasised to his bones.
He has had a MRI and there are 5 lesions. He’s had the Hormone injection and is on Tamsulosin 400mg. He has seen the urologist who took bloods to check that his PSA has come down.
He’s scheduled for a biopsy on 5th July & then will see the Oncologist to discuss treatment.
He spent 3 weeks in hosp but his angiogram was clear so he was discharged. The last 4 weeks have been a bit of a rollercoaster!! He’s a fit 72 year old who would never go to the Doctor. He isn’t showing any significant symptoms, still functioning as before.
Hello JFM, I’m sorry to hear of your husband’s diagnosis and know, from bitter experience, what a shock this can be. I hope all goes well with the biopsy and that the oncologist comes up with a plan to help your husband. Try to hold on to the fact that, even if not curable, prostate cancer is most often manageable with a whole armoury of therapies out there. In the meantime, the hormone therapy should stop the cancer growing further as the cancer cells need testosterone to replicate. The hormone therapy stops the cancer cells accessing testosterone for quite some time.
I found incredible support from people on this site at a time when I was so very frightened for my husband. We are now learning to live with the diagnosis and the treatment with that support. I am sure you and your husband will get that same support!
best of luck!
Hi JFM, sorry to read your post but welcome to the group, I'm a bit further down the road than your spouse, once he has had biopsy and a bone scan the treatment pathway should become clear, proper advice can only be given once you have all the results.
Hormons are normally given prior to the main treatment to ensure that the cancer will not flair, if it will ease your mind you can read my profile by tapping my icon. All the best Ulls.
Hi,
Ditto what Worriedwife has said. My husband is also grade 4 with bone mets, diagnosed nearly 2 years ago. He is on hormone injections every three months and also at present on Tamsulosin. However, he is 78 and not in the best of health including heart problems, but despite that, he is still with us and at present everything is stable.
As WW says, although it may possibly be incurable, it is infinitely treatable.
Best regards
Gina
