Hi. I am 58 and was first diagnosed with prostate cancer 3 years ago after getting covid. If it wasn't for all the tests I had, I probably wouldn't have had that diagnosis.

At first it was microscopic and slow growing, but here I am now with a biopsy result of 5+4 and termed "aggressive".

I have been on hormone therapy since November and started radiotherapy last week. Everything seems to be going ok ATM so I guess I'm here for reassurance more than anything ... I'm sure questions will arise as time goes on

  • Hi - And welcome to the club - I know - you didn't want to join - but you might as well use your membership!! Reassurance - well I am a Gleason 9 - on HT and finished my RT 3 weeks ago  - all is going well - in fact I am jealous as my PAS isn't as low as yours!!

Yes this is the place to be for questions and answers, you will find there are plenty more people here who know lots more than me so ask away and feel free to chat.

Good luck on your journey - are you sure you have no side effect from your HT yet by the way?

    Kind regards - Brian.

  • Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm sorry that you have found yourself here but we are all here to help.

I was 71 when diagnosed as T3A N0 M0 with Gleason 4+5=9 and PSA of 11 (risen to 15 by the time treatment started) back in 2018. I had three years of hormone treatment and 20 sessions of radiotherapy in Feb/Mar 2019. I had my last Prostap injection in June 2021 and my last two PSA tests in June and December 2022 both came back as 0.2, so currently in remission.

At 75 I regularly walk 30-50 miles a month, swim a mile twice a week and go coastal rowing as often as the wind and tides allow. The picture below was taken this afternoon on our latest outing!

I hope that gives you some reassurance.

  • Hi and thanks for responding. I'm not one for talking much on line etc so find this strange and a bit difficult.

The main side affects I'm having is constant mood swings, fine one minute and angry and frustrated over minor things the next.

The other thing I have is hot flushes, sweating profusely, then shivering cos I take my t-shirt off.

  • Hello Outdoor Walker,

my husband started the hormone therapy at the beginning of November and has now done 15 of 20 sessions of radiotherapy - last day next Friday! So, just 3 weeks ahead of you on this journey! He is T3 N0 M0 Gleason 4+3.  The biggest side effect he has been experiencing is fatigue but, with the radiotherapy, he has been getting very bloated and suffering with excessive wind. The radiotherapist advised him last week to cut out gluten and lactose . That has certainly helped. I just can’t wait to hear him ring that bell on Friday and know that this stage has been completed.

I hope all goes well for you and look forward to hearing how it goes!

  • Hello Worriedwife, thank you for your response. I don't know if I am fatigued because of treatment or because of sleeplessness. I'm on 40mg steroids daily plus loads of other meds which stop me from settling at night. These also have increased my weight (and waist). I try to keep active, I usually work in a supermarket but I'm off atm while I'm on RT.

    • Hello Seamus. Thank you for your words of reassurance. I try to keep active and optimistic.
  • Hi

The fatigue from the HT was, for me, the worst thing. My CNS recommeded that I continued to exercise which would, counter intuitively, help. The increase in weight and waist measurement is also, most likely, connected to the HT.

Interesting to note, your answer to the dreaded hot flushes, was the same as mine, namely take things off and then put them back on again!

  • Hello Stuart.

I try to keep active as much as I can. I don't drive so walk to and from work, although I'm off atm during RT. I was referred to join a stamina program however my other underlying conditions limit what I can do. I have had covid twice which has left me with breathing problems but I don't let stop me. I listen to my body and rest when needed.

    Good luck on your journey.

  • Hi. Hope everything is going well for you.

Today I had session 16 of 20 and all is going well.

One thing on my mind is trouble with peeing.

Sorry to be so blunt but I get that urgent need to go but very often hardly anything happens.I was wondering if anyone else has the same or similar difficulty. I have had a spate of urinary infections lately but don't know if it's anything to do with RT.

    Any ideas or comments welcome

    Regards,

    Pete

  • Hi Pete

I didn't have that problem but have you spoken with the RT team?

Not being able to pee could be a serious problem so please get it checked.
