Hi, I have just been diagnosed one week ago. I am 59 years old with a family history as my father had prostate cancer, I had no symptoms but took the PSA test due to this. My result was 8.5. I have found it difficult, been very emotional and found it hard to read literature at the moment. I feel quite overwhelmed but I will try to add more information as I adjust to living with this. Any tips for how to get through this stage would be appreciated.  Thanks

  • It certainly hits hard on many people particularly when you feel reasonably ok for your age.I suppose that the best advice is to listen carefully to your oncologist and not fly off at a tangent via Dr.Google.

I wish that I followed my own excellent advice but too many moments of weakness which did me little good.
I think to a certain extent that most of us put on a bit of an act but emotion is never far away.I hope that you have someone who you can give you some support when that overwhelming feeling intrudes.

  • Hello

A warm welcome to the group from me although I am so sorry to find you here. The diagnostic stage of the Prostate journey is the hardest part of the journey - it's not knowing how bad it is and what treatment there is.

You have a low PSA reading and I assume the cancer has been caught at an early stage and you should end up on a "curative pathway".

Take it easy - and ask any questions here - you will get answers from people who have "been there - done that". I can understand your feelings as your father had this cancer - treatments have moved on and it's a very treatable cancer.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks for the reply. I dont think I ever thought it would happen as I felt well and no symptoms so it was a big shock and a mental battle knowing its there now.  I'm trying to be positive as I have a very supportive wife and keeping busy. Thanks.

  • Thanks for the response, I find it hard to get the words out to friends & family but I think this community will help me to adjust.  The tests & diagnosis have been hard and I am in the process of getting the next step, waiting to discuss options with the oncologist after the mdt meeting. I have a booklet with lots of results, which I have yet to properly understand but it is early stage  Thanks for your help.

  • Welcome to the support group for you and your other half. We are here and can help, all you have to do is ask.

This is very much a couples disease and what effects you effects your wife. You both will be tested beyond belief and to be able to hold on to each other is essential for your physical and mental health.

Luck is fickle and you are here anyway so get used to asking questions and letting all your worries out. In my case the pathway is littered with tissues and tears but as you grow into the new you and your new normal you will become stronger and wiser.

At this time you are waiting patiently for the data to be reported. That’s hard on you both but before long you’ll know a bit more about your prostate, hormone treatment and the curative pathways you will be able to choose between.

Yes, there’s lots to learn but stay away from the internet as much as possible, for your own peace of mind. Experts in clinic will give you the facts. When they do after that MDM (multi disciplinary meeting) take your wife and a note pad and all the questions you want to ask right now. Be prepared for slowing the conversation and writing down the important bits. If you don’t understand, say so and get another explanation until you do know. You are there to learn, so learn.

You are our friend and now you can lean on us for help. There’s loads of ways of helping you after you ask.

Good luck and tell us how you got on as you go. There’s a profile page (press the green round sofa button at the top of the page) so you can write a list of what’s happened so far — if you wish — which helps us understand you.

Good luck to you and you’re wife, stay calm for now, and stay positive when you can.
