prostate cancer returns 22 years after radical surgery

I am nearly 85 and live alone. When aged about 60, (around year 2000), I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and opted for radical surgery which was performed by a very competent team in my local hospital, for which I will be eternally grateful. It took some time to recover but I was then kept under annual review for a decade or so, during which time my PSA reading remained at virtually zero. After ten years, at my suggestion, regular visits to hospital were discontinued but my own GP surgery continued to keep an eye on things as part of my annual review.

In 2020, after 22 years, to my absolute surprise, I was told that my PSA reading was rising again.. I was referred back to hospital and, without going into details at this point, I underwent a wide range of scans etc. The return of "prostate" cells in my body was confirmed and various options for dealing with this was discussed fully with me. In view of my age and the fact that I feel in quite good health and am enjoying a pleasant, if simple, standard of life, I opted for hormone therapy alone which I have now been on for about a year.

I have been having monthly injections of Prostap but by mutual agreement the interval has now been increased to 3-monthly.

There must be other men on this site with similar experience and I really would like to contact someone to share my feelings and concerns. I've been a subscriber for some time but my computer limitations have been sending me "round in circles". Would anyone care to extend the hand of friendship with a view to becoming Online Buddies. My next meeting with my consultant is fixed for March and I would like to be able to have an intelligent discussion with him.

  • Wombat,

    Wow, 22 years!!

Sorry nobody has answered your post until now.

How did your meeting with your consultant go in March?  Well I hope.

Hopefully this will put your name at the top of the list and you will get some more replies.

There are loads of new treatments since your original surgery 22 years ago!!!

    Hope you are keeping well.
