I,m an 83 yr old male who was diagnosed with locally advanced cancer two yrs ago with a Gleason 10 and the  oncology plan was to have Prostap for three yrs.  Unfortunately I have read that one of  symptoms can be depression/ mood change - which I have experienced quite badly twice in the last twelve months - in fact not yet out of the second bout
However I have had clinical depression for the last 50yrs and have twice yearly consultations with my psychiatrist.   He says it’s currently impossible to know if the Prostap AUGMENTS my longstanding cyclic bouts - OR is the  cause of it. He suggests the  only way to find out is to stop Prostap I.e not take it for the third year.  My oncologist says that would be possible to do but really didn’t express an opinion either one way or another.    My last  PSA readings were

Jan 2021   0.24.     July 2021. 0.10.   Oct2021. O.06

I wonder if there is anyone out there who in fact stopped Prostap after two yrs instead  of going the third year.?  And what happened.?  Did PSA levels then change markedly and we’re there withdrawal symptoms ?
in fact I’d appreciate any input from anyone who has suffered. Depression from having Prostap.   If so how long did the depressions last and was it mild or severe.

Iappreciate there is the option of Zoladex  but it seems that also can produce similar low mood/ depression symptoms - with the addition of hot flushes.

  • I didn't get depressed on Prostap but did stay on it for the full 3 years. I was originally told it would be a three year course as my Gleason score was 9, but we moved to a different Health Trust area and I was referred to a new Oncology department by my new GP. They told me that I should stop the injections after 2 years as there was no evidence that the third year was beneficial.

I decided to contact my previous Oncology nurse consultant who read my old notes and said that they would advise staying on Prostap for the full three years because of the position and aggressiveness of the original tumour. I took his advice and finished the full course in June 2021.

Sorry I can't be any more helpful but that was my story. I hope you find a way through.

  • Thank you Seamus for that.  Out of interest was yiur cancer locally advanced or was it advanced.  Mine ( locally advanced) is where the cancer has spread outside the prostate but not to other parts of the body.. if it had spread to other parts then I Think it would be just called.

if anyone else, having taken or now taking Prostap, has read this chat I’d be grateful to know if they’ve suffered from depression.

  • Locally Advanced; Gleason 4+5=9, T3A N0 M0 & PSA of 15 when treatment started.
