Hi am 73 very active busy with hobbies and enjoy walking.

After a PSA reading of 7 and following an MRI scan and Biopsy. I have been informed that there is a small cancer about 5 mm.

It can be treated with a Brachytherapy or radical prostatectomy and it is my choice. So how do I decide ?

  • Hi Syrone and welcome

Really the best way to decide is by looking at the potential side effects for each treatment and going for the the side effects that will hopefully least affect you.

Ie: Surgery , Potential  bladder and ED issues, 3 hour surgery.

    Radiotherapy and Brachytherapy

With the latest techniques not too many problems  , perhaps bowel/bladder issues during and for sometime after treatment which should fade away in time.

Possibility of future cancers/side effects years down the line, not too sure how often that happens.

20 sessions taking up about 2 hours of each day.

Possibility of taking hormone drugs for some time alongside the RT.

Your stats look quite low, have they suggested active surveillance?

    See what others say

Good luck with whatever u go for

  • Hi steve

    Many thanks

Radio Therapy not offered or active surveillance these are now added to my list of questions..

I will be talking to the consultant sometime soon . Amazing service at Canterbury Hospital

considering the bad news about waiting list being so long for many people due to covid19.

  • Surprising, most centres offer external beam Radiotherapy .

Active surveillance is best with low stats including a low Gleeson, u don't give a Gleeson figure, I assume it's low because of low PSa and only 5mm in size.

    Good luck

    Steve
