Just finished a 14 day course of hormone tablets (had the injection 7 days in) and am waiting for the result of a CT scan to see if my cancer has spread from the capsule. I gather it’s more likely it has than not?

Gleason score is 7 (3+4) and PSA is 7.5. Probably be on radiotherapy, just wondering how people with a similar profile got on with the radiotherapy? Are you able to drive yourself to and from treatment? I have a round trip of about 45/50 miles to the hospital.

I feel fine in myself and have accepted that this cancer is quite common and so am not too worried about it.

TIA to responders

Yea driving is ok I drove for a months treatment the only worry I had was if I needed a pee but I thought on and carried a large bottle in car used it once Rofl

  • HI HJP I had my treatment 18 months ago my mindset was to not  think to deeply about the treatments. The radio therapy was long 36 sessions but it went quick the young ladys put you at your ease just treat it as a day out x36 you might get side effects later but every one  is diffrent  36 sessions seem a long time but in the end you will miss going                                                                                                     good luck DAVIE B

  • Hi

The driving shouldn't be a problem - I had a similar distance and never had a problem not even needing a bottle ( which I didn't think of carrying !).

That said, what I did do, is suss out where all the pubs were on my route, which I could use their facilities in an emergency. I also carried one of the Macmillan key fobs to discreetly ask for help.

The RT treatment is boring, but once you get to know people in the waiting room, it ends up being like a social club - not one any of us want to be in mind.

My hospital had us attending 2 hours before treatment, during which time we needed to drink ( in my case it does differ) 600mm of water and use an enema, to empty the bowel. 5 mins or so on the 'bed' of the machine and off home again.

The RT, after a couple of weeks, may cause bowel problems, so I would recommend asking for a diet sheet and following it rigidly - don't do what I did and think a few sprouts and a couple of glasses of wine will be OK at Christmas- they weren't!

Hope this helps and that all goes well for you.

    Regards

    Stuart

    Trying to get fit again!

on 8 off 37 fractions gleeson 9 but no spread on hormone therapy but feeling fine at moment 29 to go

  • I gather it’s more likely it has than not?

That's a really a matter of how early it was detected: the cancer will always break out of the capsule eventually, but many are lucky enough to have it discovered before that happens, while others may not get symptoms (or the good luck of an accidental finding) until late. The CT or an MRI will usually decide the issue, so hang in there!

If you're OK driving now, you'll probably be OK driving during RT - but occasionally, the combined effects of RT/Hormones make long distance driving an exhausting procedure. If your general health is good, and age not too advanced (no offence!!), you'll likely be OK.

If I can't beat this, I'm going for the draw.

Meanwhile, my priority is to live while I have the option.
