Hi all.
Been a while for me to reach this point in my treatment, but finally got here.
I had opted for ER treatment but found out at the last meeting with consultant that they could no longer offer me that as I had had RT previously in my abdomen for another problem and they couldn't risk overlapping the same area.
I have opted now for Brachytherapy which is in three weeks time.
I have read all the information they give you but would still appreciate hearing from someone who has had this and what they had to put up with afterwards.
Also I have been advised that I will be having it performed not under General anesthesia but by having a spinal block so I will be awake throughout which I'm not looking forward to.
So any feedback would be welcome so I can prepare myself.
Cheers
Steve.
Hi
I had brachytherapy in March 2018 preceded by 6 months of hormone therapy to shrink the prostate...they don’t tell you that it also shrinks the penis and testicles . They should have in place therapy to keep the penis healthy...if you don’t use it, you loose it... at least as far as being able to have an erection is concerned. I had 2 and a half weeks of radiotherapy and then the brachytherapy op where they put in 102 radioactive seeds into a prostate the size of a walnut. I had an epidural and didn’t feel a thing for several hours and was fine thereafter. I was in hospital overnight so that they could check that I could pee adequately before they let me go. Operation was a success. Since then I’ve had ongoing urology problems with urgency and nocturia triggered by gas in the large intestine putting pressure on the nerves of the bladder and prostate. I’m still unable to have an erection...the hormone therapy has wiped out my libido, and relationships have suffered. I eventually managed to get penis therapy ...the commissioning group didn’t want to pay for the necessary equipment but eventually gave in thanks to support from the consultant. In hindsight I would have preferred to have a surgical operation that appears to avoid the follow on complications I have noted. Perhaps someone who has taken this route could comment on how their experience has gone.
