I have recently finished my RT 20 sessions. Am on HT -Apalutumide and Prostap injections every 3 months. Clinical Oncology Review 2/4 and then return to Medical Oncology.
i am awaiting results of my latest bloods, after RT. Just have felt so down at times, seeing how the HT has changed my body gets into your head.
When I keep being told, my cancer is incurable, but your more likely to die with Prostate Cancer then because of it plays with your headspace.
I am a fairly active 64 chap, who is now having to listen to his body, and it’s not easy for my Wife.
Just living with this is tough, any advice would be helpful?
Hi Mikey62,
As we get older, we all have to start listening more to what our body is telling us even whilst our minds still try to convince us that we are in the prime of our lives & still able to do what we did in our 20's. You have just finished your RT so after a period of daily activity & something to concentrate on it's now gone all quiet.
It's good that you are still fairly active & this is something that you can work on as it is one of the best ways of combatting the fatigue that is no doubt part of side effects of the HT you are on. Keeping yourself busy will help take your mind off the treatments. Focus on the fact that it is being treated & although it may be incurable is unlikely to be what finishes you off. Plan some things you & your wife can do together that maybe you have been putting off such as meals out, time away, getting together with friends / relatives, trip to the theatre, basically whatever floats your boat & is enjoyable.
I guess what I am trying to get over is that life still goes on and whilst it may not be the way you originally thought it would be, it can still be enjoyed in different ways. Life should be what you make of it not what it makes of you.
Well that's enough of my ramblings.
Best Wishes
Brian
Ok Mikey , sorry to hear, I understand must be difficult for you
I have read some good stuff about immunotherapy, just wondered if that has been talked about, really for advanced cancers.
Also PARP inhibitors, haven't read so much about that one but could be worth looking.into, possibly clinical trials.
Best wishes
Steve
Hello Mikey (Mikey62 )
A warm welcome to our band of brothers (and sisters) although I am so sorry to find you joining us. Yes, you are quite right, you are more likely to die WITH prostate cancer than OF it - what a great statistic!
The issue is the cancer is a couples cancer and even though you have it, it affects your wife too. I have been on my journey for over 4 years (click on my name or avatar for details) but from the outset my wife and I decided it would not rule our lives. Yes, the HT has done so much to affect my body - but life is still brilliant.
As Brian (Buzzers ) said in his post above, I try and be active (I've just come back from 3 weeks in Turkey), I am off watching football tonight, out with my mates tomorrow night for a couple of pints, I walk the dog at least twice a week and am off to Scotland with the family the week after next for another holiday.
Mentally help is at hand - do you have a Maggie's near you - this is a cancer charity where you can both drop in have a brew and chat about your issues - link here - Maggies. There's also our Support Line for both of you - 0808 808 00 00 (8am to 8pm 7 days a week) give them a call, they can help.
For me a positive attitude and doing as much as I can to keep active has been the answer for me - I appreciate we are all different but I hope the above helps.
Best wishes - Brian.
