Raised PSA

Hello, please can you help just found out that my husband’s (Mike) PSA has risen from 0.03 to 0.28 he’s on monthly Degarelix injections for Prostate cancer which has spread to his bones. His full blood count is abnormal as well on all counts (below normal range) Looking online that suggests likely spread to bone marrow.

We will contact urology nurse’s tomorrow but it can be 48 hours before they get back to you. Mike has never seen a urologist or an oncologist.

Does anyone else cope with a similar clinical picture, any support would be so welcome. Thank you

Moira

  • Well firstly, welcome to the forum that will help you find all your answers without Dr Google. We all are experienced prostate cancer patients, some cureable others like me, incurable.

Dr Google may fill your head with extreme possibilities where none is needed.

Yes, it sounds like your Mike is troubled with the couple’s disease Prostate Cancer which means you are as affected as he.

A PSA rise that you are noticing is only one rise. Four continual rises is a trend. So unless you have more information about the “trend” your worries are a bit premature.

Your Mike’s history of treatment would be interesting to read and perhaps his age, which can be edited into your Profile Page (too left of this screen) beneath the round green sofa button. It’s here you can fill in the gaps from the start (the diagnosis) and the scans, tests age, clinical advice given, as well as treatments he has had.

The profile page will assist us all especially the forum champions, to speedy and accurate advice and support which will start to make sense of your situation.

    Good luck

  • Hello Moira (

The rise in PSA can be caused by many factors so at this stage I would stay away from Dr Google.

Surely if Mike is on Degarelix it's been prescribed by his hospital oncology department. I would be calling them today and asking for an appointment to see a Consultant as quite rightly you are both worried about the rising PSA.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thank you so much for your response, I’ll add Mike’s profile later today.

  • It will help us help you.

    You're in safe hands here.

    Good luck

  • Thank you for your reply Brian, we feel worried that Mike has no Consultant allocated. The Degarelix was prescribed initially when he was newly diagnosed last year (in hospital). He also had one session of radiotherapy.

After that advised care to be given by urology department.  Only ever seen urology specialist nurse and not a consultant or doctor.  No oncology follow up. Degarelix given by nurse at GP practice.

Mike feels very alone with regards to his care.

  • Moira ( ), the pathway to where you are sounds strange, so giving us more background will definitely help.  Rough timescales and all results would give us a great start. I am sure we can help.

    Best wishes, David

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • Hello Moira (

That's just wrong - I have a whole team looking after me - two named CNS's (Cancer Nurse Specialists) and I have their direct line plus I have access to my named consultant and she replies all the time to any questions.

I think you need to get a consultant sorted and if you can't do this try the hospital PALS office (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) they should be able to help. You will find PALS listed in the hospital directory.

    Best wishes - Brian
