Dad has had a biopsy, MRI and a clear bone scan. Dad has T2c, with possible T3a prostate cancer, Gleason score 7 (4+3), with 60% pattern 4 and 40% pattern 3, and a PSA of 13. Hormone treatment started in December, consisting of three weeks of tablets followed by one injection, with a further injection due at the end of March. Radiotherapy is scheduled to begin at the end of March and will last for four weeks.

Recently, he has been experiencing sudden urges to open his bowels, particularly after eating. Could this be a side effect of the hormone treatment, or is it something more concerning?

  • Hi

I’m Emma, a member of the team here at Macmillan’s Online Community. I’m sorry to read about the side effects your dad has been experiencing recently and his prostate cancer diagnosis.

I just wanted to let you know that, whilst you wait for other members in the Prostate Cancer Forum to reply, we have an Ask A Nurse forum too if you were not aware. This is where you can ask questions to our Cancer Information Nurse Specialists about your dad’s treatment and side effects. They'll typically respond within 3 working days and may be able to help answer your questions.

    Best wishes,

    Emma (she/her)

  • Hello

I am on Decapeptyl for my Hormone Therapy - Bowel urgency is listed as one of the rarer side effects (1 - in 100) as I have just checked the patient information leaflet.

    Decapeptyl - Patient Information

In view of the circumstances I would advise contacting the GP to see if they agree it's the HT or something else.

    Best wishes - Brian
