Hello everyone, Since I last posted to give you all an update on my father (72 yrs)health. Its been almost 2 years now, everything was going Fine PSA was very low and he was continuing the Harmonal treatment.

Yesterday he started complaining about pain the the chest and found out once we did X ray , that he has caught Pneumonia. Currently he is admitted and antibiotics is been administered,

I could see many post related to prostate and Pneumonia.  Can any shead some information,  experience.  Will he be able to recover ?has the cancer spread into lungs , is that possible ?

Off lately his sugar level spiked up too , making him take additional tablets to control it. Is it the cancer has become more aggressive or its just a routine things which is happening due to age?

  • Hello

I am so sorry to read that your father has ended up in hospital.

Yes, there's always been a connection with Hormone Therapy (ADT) and pneumonia and yes the Prostate Cancer can spread to the lungs and give the same symptoms as lung cancer - but it is rare and it's usually noticed with a rise in the PSA and a continuous cough.

Increased HbA1c (the diabetic blood sugar measurement) is also caused by Hormone Therapy and if you are pre-diabetic starting on Hormone therapy can push you into type 2 diabetes. When i started Hormone Therapy over 3 years ago I was already a Type 2 Diabetic so with diet and help from my diabetic nurse we have been able to keep my HbA1c levels within the acceptable range of below 42 (yes I have had the odd spike).

I hope the above helps and I think

its just a routine things which is happening due to age?

you are also very much right with this statement as Prostate Cancer and old age both nibble away at our body's immune system too.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks Millibob. Today he was discharged from the hospital, almost 7 days.

He is doing good now and have recovered. The pneumonia was due to cold , he kept ignoring until the pain got severe.

All reports were normal and fortunately the cancer did not spead. It was a bacterial infection.

  • Hello

Thank you for the update - I am pleased to hear that your father's now been discharged from hospital. I hate being there it's full of people who are ill and I don't want to catch anything else!!

I am 70 and find that I have to watch my diet to keep the diabetes under control and I try and walk the dog a fair distance each day - it does us both good!

The Hormone Therapy doesn't half cause fatigue and i find if I do start to flag a good walk brings me round.

Best wishes to you and your father moving forward.

    Brian.
