Rectoprostatic Fistula after radiotherapy for Prostate cancer

Hi there ,  I was diagnosed with a Rectoprostatic Fistula in May 25 , following radiotherapy treatment for Prostate Cancer in August 24, i developed proctitis and and an ulcer a couple of months later,  which developed devastatingly into a fistula , iam 65 years old , i have been asymptomatic while on Nitrofurantoin antibiotics since being diagnosed to combat infections.  I’m hoping to avoid surgery to have a defunctioning colostomy, and my colorectal consultant looked into ways that may help heal the fistula, but really to no avail .  I’ve had a recent MRI scan ( 6 months after the original) to see how the fistula is doing, and apparently although no worse , it compares the same as before .  I’m really reluctant to go down the surgery route if at all possible , and am seeking alternative methods to help heal it !    I am reaching out to anyone out there with similar experiences who can possibly help and advise please!

 Many thanks,  Dave

  • Hello Dave (

I can't answer your question myself and a search of the Community didn't throw up anyone with a similar experience, that's not to say we don't have a Community member who could answer your question - they just haven't posted anything.

By me replying your post will go back to the top of page 1 and i hope be seen and replied to by someone who can answer your question.

    Best wishes - Brian
