I was told that my treatment was curative or would prolong my life, I accept this but what I would like to know is it possible to see a MRI scan say a year after treatment.
Our hospital boasted it had a new mpMRI scanner to help treat prostate cancer. But according to who you spoke to they did and didn't have one.
They do as I walked past every day during my months radiotherapy! Working away every day. I have a relative that works in the hospital who sent me a copy of a letter that was sent to each department about this new scanner.
Has anyone had MpMRI scan after treatment to show what radiotherapy has done, or is that a pretty vague thing to ask.
Hi Safeways , Glad things have settled since we last spoke and your RT is now a thing of the past. To be honest, I don’t know what scanners I have been on over my years on treatment. I think you have a right to see all your results but again without specialist knowledge they are not easy to read. If I wanted to know, I would ask my team for their interpretation and trust them. I honestly don’t know if a scan will show what has been treated but surely the main question is ‘am I free of the cancer’.
My suggestion to you would be to ask at your next meeting. Have you had a PSA since RT? David
Apparently scans are not considered that useful after radiotherapy treatment as the radiotherapy will show up areas where it has been and had an effect on the tissue around the area treated but from what I can understand anything else would be hard to see because of this. I am not sure if this changes over time or not - might be worth asking? It may be different with a Multi Parametric (MP) MRI but I don't know. Best person to ask is your Oncologist or Radiotherapist at the Radiotherapy Department. Not many hospitals had MPMRI when I was diagnosed so didn't have one just a bog standard MRI, but three or so years later my brother had one for diagnosis. I had a slightly higher Gleeson - PSA 13 Gleason 7(3+4) T2b(possibly 3) N0M0 and had 9 months of HT and 1 month of radiotherapy and he, with a lower gleason score of 6 had brachytherapy only. Neither of us have had scans since the treatment. My treatment was nearly a decade ago now and his will be 5 or 6 years ago. Can't believe all that time has gone by! Thankfully both of us have undetectable PSA now.
Don't think a scan is done after radiotherapy, I have certainly never had one.
That is where the PSA comes in and in fact what it was actually aimed at, return of cancer after treatment.
As long as PSA remains stable and the lower the better then everything should be fine.
Possibly u could go private but not sure how useful it would be or what it would show
Steve
