Hi Chitchy .
A warm welcome. Sorry to hear about your dad. I think it is very often more difficult when you are hit with a recurrence, especially when your dad has beaten it for so long. As Millibob ,Brian, has said, there have been great advances in Chemotherapy and supportive medication ensuring that quality of life is maintained during treatment. My husband was dreading it but, at the age of 79, he had 6 cycles and said that it was not as bad as he had feared. However, it is the advances in hormone therapy and different forms of radiotherapy where the biggest strides have been made in recent years, as well as things like immunotherapy, nuclear therapy and genetic therapy. Our oncologists both say they have 'more tools in the toolbox' and hubby is currently undergoing SBRT on his distant mets. The thing to remember is that the doctors will not recommend a treatment if they do not think your dad could cope with it so they must think he is strong enough at the moment which is a good sign.
Please stay positive and strong for both of your parents, but also get the help if you need it. Very often just expressing your fears and knowing that you are not alone is enough but do not be afraid to ask for help if you are struggling.
This is our forum so come back with any questions and someone is sure to repl with some helpful insights or just a kind word of support.
