Hi, didn’t imagine I’d be posting here a few months ago…….I normally post on holiday/travel forums…. So hello. I had PSA x 2 before Christmas 2023. 8.2. 7.1 Then MRI , then biopsy. Diagnosed mid Jan 4+3. I’ve seen a consultant who 1st broke the news. Apparently I have 2 slow 2 moderate from biopsy. She kind of gave me the option to have removal or Active S. I also spoke to my Dr and in fact another Dr also . When pushed all 3 said they may well side with the A.S. In the mean time I had the choice to go and see the actual consultant / surgeon at the hospital 100 miles from where I live that do the op. Very nice chap, BUT he said he did not like a Gleason 4+3 in a 57 yr old and advised I have the op although that was just his kind advice. He said if it was a Gleason 6 , yes 100% do nothing apart from keeping an eye on it. I kind of feel I need to listen to him and go ahead with the op. I can just hear his voice as he as he did say “ I do not like a Gleason 7 in a 57 yr old . Anyway that’s my story so Thankyou..
Hi Brian. I agree with you. I’ve felt there is so much going on and on top of that for the last month I didn’t know for sure what path I was even going down or even how I was going to decide…….It’s set , going to derriford for pre op next Tuesday. All the best, Mat.
I imagine you will be going to Derriford by car - we found the multi storey car park was the easiest one to get a space in, but always made sure we were at the hospital at least an hour beforehand as all the car parks get very busy. A tip one of the staff gave us was to use the park & ride & then catch the bus down to the hospital & apparently a lot of the nurses do that, although we never tried it ourselves.
Morning all. Quite a lot has happened since removal back in may. Unfortunately 3 month post op psa came back at 0.11, then 3 months later ( nov) psa was 0.23. I went for a radioactive scan up in Taunton a month ago. Scan showed nothing apparently. Being treated as though cancer is around prostate bed ( highly likely according to consultant). Started hormone tablets just over 3 weeks ago that I’ve finished and 2 weeks ago had a month supply of h/t by injection. I’m on h/t for 6 months. I start radiotherapy, 25 sessions on Jan 20th. Thanks for asking. Regards, Mat.
Hi Mat MWP - thanks for your interesting update - good job you didn’t go on active surveillance, eh? Anyway the prostatectomy is water under the bridge now and I would expect EBRT to the prostate bed to sort you out. I notice that you’re having 25 sessions, so that may include pelvic area radiotherapy in case there is any lymph node activity higher up. I remember that you had a very small prostate gland (16mm) and a PSA density of over 40%, which made it likely that your lesion would break out into the surrounding area. I also had a high PSA density of over 50% (small 26mm gland and PSA of 13. I also had pelvic area radiotherapy, for that reason, together with some aggressive features (cribriform and AIP) which meant that mine were more likely to go “walkabout” if I let them. AW
Hi, just seen the update on this thread. I was diagnosed in June this year following discovery of my Prostate quite by chance. Initial Gleason was 3+4 but was upgraded to 4+5 by the regional cancer centre. At 3+4 everything was on the table, AS, surgery radiotherapy even chemotherapy however once the upgrade came through my only option was surgery followed by chemotherapy. I’m 68 nudging 69 and I didn’t like what I was hearing as we discussed surgery so as I have BUPA, I arranged for a second opinion. First thing the Oncologist did was to park the surgery option in the long grass as he thought I was too young for such a radical procedure. He undertook a comprehensive lifestyle survey and then recommended AS with 20 sessions of EBR. I’m 6 months into my journey I’m doing really well, if I’m honest better than I expected but then I’m not sure I knew what to expect. We’re all on a journey not of our choosing and most of us will take different routes hopefully to the same destination but in my opinion how you reach that destination should be your choice. I sincerely you get the support and information needed to make that decision. Take care and all the best for Christmas and the New Year
Hello SP2356
Thank you for the post - yes we all have a different journey and we all aim for the same destination - a cure. Two things surprise me in your post.
* Surgery - I have seen this being offered to fit 75 year olds. Providing the cancer has not left the Prostate then it's fine.
* Gleason 9 - That's one aggressive Gleason score - in 3 years you are the first Gleason 9 I have seen with only AS and EBRT !!
If it works for you that's fine - not knowing your TNM score and PSA readings I can't comment -but I am amazed that you are on AS with just Radiotherapy!!
Best wishes - Brian.
