Exercise during Hormone therapy

Hi All. 

After a lot of research and help from the good people on this site , I am favouring  undertake HT/RT treatment instead of the surgery option.  A quick question to all out there who have had HT.

During HT before you start RT can you still do exercise such as Hiking and golf?

Same question but during the 4 weeks of RT and during the follow on HT?

I read a lot about being tried and lethargic to bering able to work normally and life goes on a normal.

I thought the best approach would be to ask those in the know. All you guys.

    I have just said on another thread - keep going, keep exercising, and keep the fatigue at bay. On my personal journey I have continued my walking (we have 2 dogs) continued all my activities, going to football, meeting my mates for a pint and working and holidays.

    During the latter half of Radiotherapy I felt the fatigue more but I carried on as normal (66 when diagnosed 68 now).

    It's coming up to 4.45 now and having worked all day (since 7.15 at a desk) I am about to take my 2 dogs for a 3 mile walk - it's been hard and I do have to push myself - and I have still put wight on. (Thanks Hormones!!)

    If I feel lethargic, I think of the oncologist and her two words "Curative Pathway" and I an up and out.

  • Thanks Millibob. You’re a star. I am planning to ensure I do not start slacking as long as it’s doing good and not undoing the good work the HT/RT is doing. I certainly want to fight the flab and keep it at bay if I can Grin

  • It took 18 months of "fighting the flab" before the HT "Got me" with the additional weight I am winning slowly but it's hard work.. Two additional things (and don't forget it's not medical advice!).

    *HT can weaken your bone structure - check with your team to see if you should be on Calcium/Vitamin D tablets.

    *HT can also increase your HBA1C (blood sugar) and push you towards Type 2 diabetes (I was diabetic before Prostate Cancer) so keep an eye on that.

  • Hi , the answer is a big YES to exercise during HT & RT. you need to keep on top of the fatigue and the best way is exercise. The worst fatigue will come after you have finished your RT. I had 20 sessions of RT back in February & March 2019 and was pretty much flattened after it. My friends in the rowing club made up a rota and one of them would call round every day and take me for a walk. At first it was just a few hundred yards but we were soon going several miles. I'm nearly five years post RT and I now walk at least 30 miles every month, swim a mile twice a week and go coastal rowing as often as the wind and tides allow.

  • Absolutely keep going as normal.  I went to the gym at least 4 days a week all through my HT and radiotherapy.  I am sure it helped with all possible side effects.  I didn't feel much more fatigued than normal and only put on 4 lbs during the whole time - though this really did amazingly manifest itself around my middle.  Exercise  and good nutrition/healthy eating is a good plan all through treatment and beyond.  all the best.

    here is a useless piece of advice - keep exercising but know your limits and don't overdo things. I am not a very fit person but I try and walk every day, I have been known to go to the gym occasionally as well
