Hi all
Hubby starts RT on 18th so if all goes according to plan should be finished by 15th June.
I have read the thread on what people wished they knew beforehand and am aware of the various side effects and that everyone reacts differently but, on balance, what do you think the chances are that he will be well enough to attend our son's wedding mid August and go on a short break to Disneyland Paris the second week of September? The wedding is local and obviously we have no control over the timing of that. The holiday is booked but accommodation and Eurotunnel booking can be cancelled up until a week before. However we need to make arrangements for our dogs and purchase travel insurance so wondering whether to do that or push the holiday back.
How bad is the fatigue likely to be by then? And the urinary and bowel problems? At least there ate loads of toilets there!
Any thoughts would be gratefully received Many thanks.
In my experience, he will be over the fatigue but may have other side effects like rectal bleeding but that shouldn’t ruin your plans. I’m not medically qualified but speak from my own experience having had full pelvic radiation.
Hi Dogs4me,
If his experience is anything like mine he will be fine for both (20 sessions of RT + HT). If he is still having any side effects, there will be time after finishing the RT for them to start improving & be more of an inconvenience rather than an outright problem plus time to find little workarounds to manage. The bonus is that he will have 2 very positive & enjoyable things to look forward to.
Best Wishes
Brian
If it helps Dogs4me , have a look at the lower section of my bio. I tried to unravel the side effects I had from 20 fractions of radiotherapy with time.
My bottom line is, after 2 months he may be still feeling the fatigue to a small degree but any of the more common immediate bowel and bladder side-effects should have improved dramatically. My gut feeling is he will be OK for both the wedding and Disneyland, presuming his inguinal hernia isn’t giving him any issues (I also had one of those repaired a few years back…!). The important thing is for him to listen to his body and rest when it tells him to, and to exercise as regularly as he can to help with any fatigue. A walk every day, building up distance, will help, if his hernia allows. Mine used let me know it was there after a mile or so…!
Hello Dogs4me
I had only fatigue after my 20 fractions and was back to normal after a week or too. We are all different and with the thoughts of a wedding and holiday I hope he will be fit enough to attend both.
As for travel insurance we do have a group for this and the link is here:
Travel insurance forum for cancer patients
My fellow Community Champion Derek, (excavator ) pointed me in the direction of a company - Albert and Eddie for travel insurance - their cover and price was great and I now use them for my cover.
I wish you both well and hope everything falls into place.
Best wishes - Brian.

Hello Dogs4me
Brian mentioned Albert & Eddie as a possible travel insurer.
A recent post on the travel insurance forum Rob R mentioned Allcleartravel as another insurer which provided good terms for them, so perhaps also worth a try?
