After having the snip about 20 years ago, i could still produce semen.  Since having diagnosed with PC and had all the treatment with 2 years of prostap injections, i have become unable to get an erection to be able to penetrate, I do not produce semen anymore so having dry orgasms. I have been off the prostap now for 2 years and my PSA has gone up from 0.01 to 0.04 which isnt a big deal, but i am getting frustrated in not being able to get and keep an erection and even more so not being able to produce semen. Is there anything else other than Tadalifil which i am taking on a daily basis as i have been attempting to make love, but this is now a no-go and my partner has left me.

  • Hello   A warm welcome  to the Online Prostate Cancer community.

I am so sorry to hear of your problems not being able to keep an erection - after a gap of 2 years since your last hormone injection - things should be much better. The three types of advice I can give you are:

    * Contact your GP - advise them of your issues and ask them to refer you to the ED (Erectile Dysfunction) clinic - There are various other routes to a full erection other than Tadalafil (although it's better than Viagra!).

    * Sexual counselling is also available via your G P practice - this may be of help.

    * Lifestyle changes can help - stay a healthy weight, stop drinking, smoking and exercise more - but these may not apply to you.

You may also pose your question in our "Ask a Nurse" forum and the link to this is below (it may take a couple of working days for a reply).

    Ask a Nurse

I do hope you can resolve your issues. if I can do anything else for you please don't hesitate to contact me.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  •    You don't say in your post whether you had radiotherapy alongside your two years of Prostap. The majority of the fluid component of semen is produced in the prostate gland and not in the testicles so having a vasectomy doesn't affect the amount of fluid very much but having radiotherapy does. After RT the prostate will heal to a certain extent but will never produce the same amount of seminal fluid as it did before.

I hope that helps you to understand.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift.

  • Hi Seamus, yes i had RT and thank you for your response.

  • Hi Manchi. Sorry about what you are experiencing. I would just add that there may by another reason occuring simultaneously with your PC treatment causing the problem, such as diabetes. I know from my own experience pre PC that Type 2 diabetes affected my erections very rapidly. I would suggest consulting your GP as Millibob says but also ask if you could have a full MOT or at leasts tests for diabetes and any other medical conditions which could cause your problems. And yes, also push to be referred to your ED clinic. There are other option to tabs, including injections and a pump. I've gone for a pump. It is a bit of a bother but it does work. Also it provides excercise for the little fella which they say is very important. On the plus side, glad to hear you are 4 years down the line and with a PSA of only 0.04 you will hopefully get many more under your belt.

  • Hi Manchi

As has already been said low or no semen is due to the Radiotherapy.

That's the one thing that still bugs me 6 years after treatment finished, I realise not possible to get it back.

On the plus side , if you're cured of cancer then arguably a small price to pay.

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • Thank you grundo. for your input.

  • Hi Steve

The absence of semen bugs me too - makes me feel less of a man. But, as you say, a small price to pay - I've just got to get my head around it.

    Regards

    Trying to get fit again!
  • Hi Stuart

The other thing I have noticed is that I can get a burning sensation at the end of orgasm, possibly because of lack of fluid.

    Not ideal obviously Sweat smile

    Best wishes

  • Stuart, indeed it's a "small" price to pay.  I'm coming up to 2 years in remission, still the dreaded E.D.  My libido is coming back, but down there, there's a bit of a feeling, but that's about it.

    But as you said:

On the plus side , if you're cured of cancer then arguably a small price to pay

You can't say more than that!!

Hello Steve . Let it never be said I don't point you in the right direction. The good people at your local ED clinic should be able to get you back "up and running"
