Hello all!
Hope you are all doing ok, as best as you all can be️
My question is, do any of you have some good advice with regards to diet, exercise, supplements etc? We are only 4 weeks into this new normal (although it feels like we heard the news 4 years ago)
2 weeks since first degarelix injection, only side effect so far is hot flushes which partner is taking sage for.
Any other advice? We are obviously aware of possible weight gain, we really want to make changes to help reduce this and to maintain fitness.
Also...alcohol? To partake or not??? Obviously best not to.....but we like a wee social drink.....just really looking for any "hints and tips"......medication is one part of this journey, we also need to make changes and adapt to get the most out of whatever years we have together️
Hello Polly (Polly1912)
A very good question - I try to keep as fit as possible by walking and being busy all the time but in 4 years I have put on weight. The more exercise you do the better you will be but it's a personal choice.
One thing to be aware of with Hormone Therapy is that he can grow a nice pair of man boobs (Gynaecomastia) if he's worried about this the GP can prescribe medication. I didn't bother as I have that much other medication and so I have grown a pair!!.
As to alcohol the advice from "above" is not more than 14 units per week. Yes it's bad for you but then there is the question of "Quality of Life". I am 70 this year and I have a great social life with plenty of friends, so I am out 2/3 times a week - my "Quality of Life" is great (don't ask how many units I drink!!). .
Much of it is common sense, Mrs M has me eating more salads, vegetarian meals and has cut out processed food - but again living in the North of England you can't beat pie, chips peas and gravy!!
I hope this helps.
Best wishes - Brian.

Good morning Polly1912
My OH is on long term HT . He walks every morning and goes to the gym at least three times a week . This helps to maintain his weight but also helps with the fatigue that comes with the HT.
Alcohol he will take a small dram of malt on occasions but he enjoys the non alcoholic Peroni or Guiness.
Supplements should be prescribed by you GP as per you Oncologist instruction
best wishes
Liz & OH xx
Hi Polly1912 I suspect that you should cut out alcohol, train as hard as you can and eat only healthy food.
Personally I try not to drink more than 2 pints or 2 glasses of wine, I play tennis once a week and try and walk 10k steps a day and eat a reasonable diet with the odd ‘naughty’ food thrown in occasionally. I don’t worry if I fail to achieve these aims but put quality of life at the top of my list.
Having said all that, during chemo and RT I did adopt a very strict regime (no alcohol and diet) as I felt my body was already under enough stress without me deliberately adding to it. Hope this helps.
Best wishes, David
Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.
Not forgetting that you can get the special wine glass that holds a full bottle so your conscience is clear when you answer 2 glasses to the doctor .
On a serious note, life would be so boring if we only ate & drank what was good for us, & to my mind, there is a lot of truth to the old saying '' a little bit of what you fancy does you good''
