Hi everyone,
I haven't posted since my husbands journey with prostate cancer began April last year. What a year it's been, highs, lows and everything in between! Now we have started another phase where our family business has disintegrated, our savings have all but gone and we find ourselves, for the first time in our lives, applying for state benefits. That in itself has caused friction because it should have been done long before now but my husband refused to 'give in.' We battled on until May, when we just had to bite the bullet. Anyway, my question, for which any input would be welcome. To cut a long story short we applied for Universal Credit, as novices we knew and still know only what we have read. We approached our first meeting at our local office with dread, it was nothing short of degrading, embarrassing and emotional, the advice was sketchy and in the end totally incorrect and set us up for a huge fall. We were told that paperwork being completed in the office 'should' bypass the need for an HC50 having to be completed and we should ignore future messages on our 'journal' that called for it. On 10th June that is what my husband did, he read the entry that said he should expect a HC50 in the post, to complete and return. However, every day we checked the journal for our 'things to do,' which we promptly did, until there was nothing more to do.
This week we found ourselves out of our depth because, after being told our statement would be with us on 1st July, it did not materialise until the 11th and showed that we were entitled to £0 this month because the HC50 was not completed. I rang Universal Credit to be told that because the form was not completed my husband must be fit for work. I seriously wondered what had happened on the 2 occasions we visited the local office and were told that due to my husbands diagnosis, stage 4 (advanced) the information we gave would bypass the need for the HC50, they had even cancelled his appointment with the back to work advisor (sorry no real idea what their title is). So, dear friends, my question, now we have the dreaded HC50,does my husband complete ALL sections, or as the form appears to suggest, or just personal details, the 3 questions about whether he has cancer, then move to section 24?
Any suggestions would be welcome because we seriously need to get this form completed urgently.
Kind Regards.
Hi , if you have a local Maggie Centre as they usually have a benefits welfare worker who will support you through the maze of DWP .
if they don’t your local council will have . Or possibly if you contact you specialist cancer nurse they may have contacts to support you both .
it’s hard enough without added extras. You husband might be entitled to PIP. or AA depending on his age .
best wishes & hope you get sorted soon

Sorry to hear of these extra complications. I am wondering if your local authority social services will be able to help you - especially given your husband’s diagnosis? I’m also wondering if your husband has, as a self employed person, contributed to a private pension? Given his diagnosis, you might be able to start drawing an income from that?
Hello Millie (MillieM)
If you contact our support line on 0808 808 00 00 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday if they can’t put you in touch with a financial advisor they will arrange a call back.
Citizens Advice are also great for advice on benefits.
I do hope you get sorted.

I feel your pain im self employed and I'm trying to get ESA for when I have my radiotherapy,so far I've filled in 2 massive forms, had a phone interview got a sick note from the doctor now I have another form for the doctor to fill in and sign im beginning to think it's not worth the hassle
Hi Mace, I understand exactly what you mean. It's a nightmare. The benefits office speak a language we don't understand. They speak of form numbers and journals etc.....like we know what they mean.
Yesterday we finally received the HC50, work capability form, and looking at the form it's misleading because it suggests there are just a few things to complete if you have cancer and you skip the rest, Yes, like we trust that to work!!!!
Today we took the final page into my husband's clinical specialist nurse to be filled in. We have only been with our doctor a few months so he couldn't do it. So, we will now complete the rest. She's a gem and completed it swiftly.
We feel annoyed because we were led to believe, by an advisor in our local benefits office, that the HC50 was not needed because she could by pass it. We sat with her for more than an hour.....what rot. That is the very reason his claim was rejected, he hadn't received it so obviously, didn't complete it. That should have happened at the beginning of June.
Sadly, my husband could not work through his chemotherapy or radiotherapy, plus the side effects from his medication are dreadful. His pain is not controlled, he is struggling with insomnia, breathless, has no energy or stamina and is generally unwell. It was in the best interests of each of us to close the business. So, here we are, he is 59 and feeling like it's his fault that he can't work. He is feeling, as you do, is it worth it?I'm retired and thankful that I have a private pension, his pension is such that he cannot collect until retirement.
Thankyou for replying, I hope you get somewhere with your claim, it really is disgraceful that we are made to feel degraded and embarrassed because of a deadly disease and all for the pittance they offer anyway.......good luck Mace.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
