Diet & Prostate Cancer

I have been trying to find any advice on diet for Prostate Cancer sufferers. There seems to be conflicting ideas. My husbands Cancer specialist nurse initially told us there isn't anything you can't do or eat(within moderation) but on reading articles some suggest a vegetarian diet. Very confusing. Any advice please

  • Hi SL

There is no evidence that changing diet helps with PC.

However when I was diagnosed 10 years ago I did alter mine to a degree.

Cut down on sugars, red meat, refined carbs, alcohol.

Haven't got a clue if it helped although I am still hereSweat smile

  • Thanks Steve,  we try to eat as healthy as we can but I keep thinking if my husband can't have things he enjoys now when can he & then that little voice says " yes but you should eat healthier" We don't eat a lot of red  eat, probably mince once a week, but we also eat chicken & sausages( not the best I know). We also try to eat granary bread & low fat spread. My husband has a couple of pints of beer at the weekend. He has also swapped black tea for green. Just hoping I'm not doing him any more harm really but as you say YOU are still her & long may that continue for you & ALL the men on this journey  x

  • Diet sounds fine, chicken ok, bangers not too often ,

  • Healthy diet less sugar less meat - red meat especially fewer processed foods in your diet lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and as often as possible scratch cooked meals - just like grandma used to do.

  • Agree with comments, eat as healthy as you can, hormone therapy causes weight gain, but don’t go without, it’s tough enough without going without for limited benefit

  • Hi Susie,

I am going through the same process, looking for a diet that can make my body a less attractive place for cancer cells to proliferate. I am currently on a low-carb diet as this has been suggested as a possible way to starve cancer cells which are hungry for sugar, although other research says caloric restriction is more effective....effectively starving yourself, not something that's easy to do and potentially more harmful than helpful!

There's so much stuff out there it's difficult to know what to believe, a lot of it is guesswork.

During my searches, I found this scientific paper which sought to identify vegetables which killed off cancer cells in vitro. It's quite definitive and identifies some real veggie stars when it comes to fighting cancer, however this doesn't necessarily mean they work as well when added to our diet. This paper also has the advantage of being relatively easy to understand which many other scientific papers are not!

    www.chrisbeatcancer.com/.../Anti-Cancer-Vegetables-Study.pdf

The paper takes 8 common cancers and tests 34 different vegetables against them, it makes absorbing reading and has the advantage of being professionally produced with a full appendix of references, and what's wrong with proposing that people eat more green vegetable?

Sadly, one of the stars is garlic, I tried this but it nearly cost me my marriage!......fortunately another star is the humble leek which my wife finds quite acceptable.

I have also ordered some concentrated vegetable powders, leek, broccoli, Brussels, kale etc, which I will mix into soups and make smoothies from.....fortunately I love Brussels sprouts, the other effect is losing a bit of weight, and there wasn't much of me to start with anyway, but hey ho...at least I'm doing something....

    Hope this helps,

    Good luck

  • Tunybgur, thanks so much for this brilliant article! Cheers!

  • Hi Wilding Man,

Glad you found it helpful, you're lucky it's still here, I posted the same reference for general information on another forum and got my wrist firmly slapped by the moderators as it wasn't from an approved source.

I did protest that it was a professionally produced scientific paper with references etc but it didn't cut any ice.

I forgot it was still here, I still think it is an excellent paper which gives some really helpful data in an easily understandable form, and nothing that could potentially be harmful even if the data was subsequently proven to be flawed, unless your partner objects to garlic as much as mine did!

I mentioned above that I was on a very low-carb diet, which I still am, but my ongoing research tends to suggest that low-carb, although helping, is not as effective as caloric restriction....I'm still researching that bit, but I won't be passing on any specific advice, just in case I incur the wrath of the administrators again.

I'm still consuming copious amounts of the PC cell destroying veggies identified in the paper and feeling much better for it!

    Good luck

  • Thanks again and good luck to you too.
