Hormone therapy and PSA before radiotherapy?

My husband has been on hormone therapy since the beginning of November and prior to radiotherapy. He had a blood test today and asked them to throw in a PSA test at the same time. Should his PSA be the same, higher or lower if the hormone therapy is working? I can’t find an answer to this by googling!

  • Number 3 is between my belly button (last seen a number of years ago!) and my best friend (last seen even longer ago!).

My third one was further down than that. It's still there but requires a bit of grooming to find it! One of the hip ones is also still there but the other has gone. That's nearly 4 years since they were done.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift.

  • Mine went down only slightly on HT the first 3 months it only went down by 0.2 which was very disappointing as I thought it would be much lower.  It went down a little lower each time but by the time I started radiotherapy 6 months after starting HT it had only gone down to just under 6 -started at 13.  Others have different results we are all different, our physical and chemical make up differs as does diet and activity levels.  It should, over all go down but this may differ in amount each time or at some stages it may just stay the same.  I was required to have a PSA testa week to 10 days before each injection so that the nurse had the result when I came for my injections.

  • I only had two - feel short changed now - both still highly visible and easily found after nearly 7 years!  Must have used different ink on me.  I always thought I was going to go to my grave with no tattoos.  These however I am very pleased to have.

  • Freefaller, just been having a look at my PSA levels.  Mine started on 12.4, then after 3 months on hormones it went down to 1.09

The week after the Radiation treatment finished it was down to 0.045

In February 2021 I was told that I was in Remission, PSA 0.09

October 2021 up slightly to 0.01

    Still nothing to worry about.

It's interesting to see how others PSA levels changed.

    Next check in February.

  • After radiation I was down to 0.02 and it has played around down there for the last 6 +years not always keeping stable but I put the slight variations down to the different labs the tests may go to as our practice has two surgeries about the same distance from our house the one in the little village goes to one hospital and the one in the town goes to a different hospital and its just pot luck when I call to make my appointment which surgery they send me to - sometimes they also send me to the hospital or another clinic.  So there are 3 different labs my test can go to and also I know that if one lab is busy they send it out to another one sometimes to the university teaching hospital a little further away.  I was disappointed that my PSA didn't get really low during the HT  I had expected a bigger fall - maybe that was my problem but that didn't make any difference to the efficacy of the treatment overall.

  • Without any knowledge at all of what PSA levels should or should not be after treatment, I do know that the level fluctuates to some degree between tests before treatment. My husband was on watchful waiting for several years and, as the level was clearly on a rising trajectory his PSA tests moved from annual to 6 monthly. Sometimes it was up a bit and at other times down a bit. We were told by the urology consultant, that once it hit 10, then action would be needed. From reading posts on here, I think he should have been offered a scan much sooner but, just 5 years ago, our local trust was refusing to do scans without a TRUSS biopsy. This changed soon afterwards due to local protest. I have read, too, that some foods are likely to help lower the PSA but I’m not sure?
