Not eating

Not sure if I am duplicating this on another part of the site, but  my husband (77) was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer about a year ago.  He has multiple bone mets throughout the skeleton and whilst initially on Firmagon (hormone therapy), he has changed to Prostap as he had too much pain from the first.

He has bladder incontinence which is manageable by wearing pads but has been having often uncontrollable diarrhea every day for nearly four months.  He has had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy so far and oncology say nothing to do with the cancer.  He recently had an MRI to rule out spinal compression and a contrast ct scan.  Nothing sinister found that they didn't already know.

However, my biggest worry is that he can no longer can eat.  I have tried everything, obviously including his favourite foods.  He can manage sweet things like fruit, yoghurt and soft deserts but he just cannot mange more than a couple of mouthfuls of any savoury food and is having Energy drinks supplied by the doctor.

My questions are, do other sufferers have bad diarrhea and is total lack of appetite and inability to eat normal.  He is going downhill so fast and also getting dehydrated too. I am at my wits end trying to help him.

  • Gina,

Remember Alexa and her sounds of the ocean?  If I did that I would end up with a Bank Holiday Weekend at Whitley Bay, no soothing sounds, just noisy families and drunks.  Or even Foghorns!

Blend in nicely with my (alleged) snoring!

  • Ha ha.

Gosh, Whitley Bay. My mother's family are from "up north" and we used to go and stay with my Grandmother in Wideopen.  I remember day trips to Whitley Bay fondly but bet it has changed now!

Richard used to snore terribly and then I found some wax earplugs which worked wonders.  I even slept through an earthquake! Mind you, having shared a static caravan with my girls and grandchildren, it has become apparent that I too snore. However, I am sure my snoring is more like a kitten purring! :-)

    Ciao

  • Not a woman as you would still have the same symptoms, but worse.  Still, you may be a dab hand at making apple pies!!!

  • Sorry, replying to your messages in the wrong order but it won't be rocket science to find which one I am referring to!! Yes Sidney is my cockapoo.

My granddaughter became a vegetarian a few years ago after watching a programme about, funnily enough, a slaughter house! She has surprised me by sticking to it and I am very proud of her.  However, I think her weakest point was when we were in a caravan and I was making bacon rolls.  How anyone can resist the smell of bacon, I do not know.

Yes, he is starting to eat much more now.  Before it was only drinks and liquids but he is doing much better.  I knew the steroids would help.  Yes, his psa was almost through the roof.  I was so angry that he waited so long to mention his problem to me at which point I straight away marched him off the the docs.  (Okay, I had to call them and nag to get an appointment as we all have to now). One psa test and finger up the bum and that was all it took to tell him he had advanced prostate cancer. Bloody hell, if he had a runny nose or a cold, I never hear the end of it but cancer, he keeps to himself!!

I am grateful to Sidney as he gets me out for a walk every day and was a total blessing through covid lockdowns.

    Regards

  • Hi Gina

I just have to chip in.

    Whitley Bay!!!

I used to live there and had my very first holiday job there changing money into pennies for the slot machines at The Spanish City. I was all.of 15. A long time ago!

My pay?? A pound a day!

My very best to you and your husband. He's a lucky man to have you to care so much.

  • Hi Stromness,

Did you not put your pound a day straight back into the slot machines?!!! You sound a similar age to me.  I worked in Fleet Street for Daily Mail and my weekly pay was £17!

    Cheers

    Gina

  • Hi Gina!

I can say I never put a single penny in a machine!! In fact I saved up and bought a second hand tape recorder which I used for the next 20 years.

I will always remember riding pillion on a friend's motor bike reaching 80 mph (on deserted back roads) on the way home from the amusements.

So. Extremely sensible and cautious one minute and just a daft laddie the next!

You are having a very bad time just now. I hope this little bit of lightness helps raise a smile.

My very best to you and Richard. I'm thinking of you both.

  • Gina, That's what they all say!  You can get some noisy kittens!

I've never heard my snoring, it's woken me up before though.

A swift elbow in my back seems to wake me also.

Whitley Bay is totally different now.

In the 1970s I would go for days out (couldn't afford holidays then) with my mother and brothers, spend most of the day on the sand, occasionally getting 10p to put in the slot machines in the Spanish City.

In the 1980s, I used to go drinking in Tynemouth and Whitley Bay at the weekends.

Now, it's totally different.  No Dodgems, unless you are crossing the road.  Spanish City totally changed, now it's all Cafés and Restaurants.

  • Gina, I do make a good Cheese Scone!

  • Gina, the bit about Richard having a runny nose or a cold, it must be a man thing!  I bet all of us men can relate to that!

Glad Richard is starting to eat more.

Got my letter back from the specialist, looks like I probably will be going back on Budesonide.

Hope you both have a good weekend.
