Not eating

Not sure if I am duplicating this on another part of the site, but  my husband (77) was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer about a year ago.  He has multiple bone mets throughout the skeleton and whilst initially on Firmagon (hormone therapy), he has changed to Prostap as he had too much pain from the first.

He has bladder incontinence which is manageable by wearing pads but has been having often uncontrollable diarrhea every day for nearly four months.  He has had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy so far and oncology say nothing to do with the cancer.  He recently had an MRI to rule out spinal compression and a contrast ct scan.  Nothing sinister found that they didn't already know.

However, my biggest worry is that he can no longer can eat.  I have tried everything, obviously including his favourite foods.  He can manage sweet things like fruit, yoghurt and soft deserts but he just cannot mange more than a couple of mouthfuls of any savoury food and is having Energy drinks supplied by the doctor.

My questions are, do other sufferers have bad diarrhea and is total lack of appetite and inability to eat normal.  He is going downhill so fast and also getting dehydrated too. I am at my wits end trying to help him.

  • Hi Mr & Mrs Ulls,

I've been on Apixiban about 4 and 1/2 years now.  It's weird what it's done with me.  I used to be a hot blooded male, now thanks to the Apixiban and Hormones I'm more like a...God knows what!

Good job I still have a sense of humour, and my partner by my side.  She'll keep me in check.

  • I tell my wife she is a vampire, dead but won't lie down, she respondeds by pretending to bite my neck an convert me.

But really keeping her warm is a major task, she doesn't like having lots of layer's on and the heating, stays in the house for weeks at a time in winter.

  • I don't know if there is a law against staking a vampire? No I be very lonely without her.

  • Ulls,

The previous post had a male and female vampire on.  It doesn't look right now.

  • Hi Steve,

Richard is on Warfarin and he is such a cold morsel.  No hot flushes for him and in fact whilst I was sleeping with my ice blocks he, in a separate room, was wrapped up in a 15 tog duvet all night throughout the heatwave.

We became so incompatible as regards sleeping, separate rooms was the only option. I have my windows open, he likes the room hermetically sealed.  I have the curtains lightly drawn so I can see when it gets light, he would have the curtains drawn and steel shutters if we had them. I like my room cool at all times, he has his warm and the electric blanket on most of the year!!!

Weather much cooler today and was lightly raining this morning.  Just taken Sidney, plus his cousin Betty (minding her for a fortnight for daughter) for a walk and it was lovely, almost slightly cool. This morning was so dull I almost, almost wished for the heat wave and then remembered how awful it was!!

    Best regards

  • Gina,

    I dunno, you're never happy!

Glad I'm not on Warfarin, too much hassle.  I can't anyway because of the medication I'm on for Epilepsy.  I started on Tinziparin injections every day but ended up like a purple and yellow Bee Bee.  It was all about what doesn't counteract with the Phenytoin (Epilepsy med).  Apixiban was the best of the rest but I still have to take a double dose as half of it gets eaten up by the Phenytoin.

I'm not straight forward in getting medicine now.  It's a case of "see what counteracts with what"

For my biopsies last year I had to come off the Apixiban 5 days before, then injections for a couple of days... The saga goes on.

When I get my Colonoscopy next month, the specialist said only to stop the Apixiban 1 day before.  Then it's "get the camera crew in, biopsies, the lot."

For all I'm on Blood-thinners, I really feel the cold, even when it's warm outside.  My fingertips are like Ice.

On the bright side, the Hot Flushes warm me up, sometimes far too much.  Won't complain, it's a necessary evil.

Spitting on to rain now.  Knowing my luck it will be acid rain.

    Such a happy soul, eh!!

Have a good weekend, you and the Ice man.

Say woof to Sidney and Betty.

The only way to keep sane is to be insane!

  • Glad I am not the only one who gets cold on antioagulants - Apixaban. especially fingers and feet  Yes, its been really warm just recently - just had the first rain in over 3 weeks but still very warm - 23 all night in our bedroom with window open!  but I get cold when I sit still - especially with drafts from windows and doors - whereas my wife is boiling hot and complaining night and day!  I think this rain has just made it steamy with humidity here.  Wife not complaining yet though!

The thing with getting old is that you take a tablet for one thing which you then may have to take another medication for one of the side effects and then another medication for another side effect - or you find you can't take one so have to take two to get a similar effect - and so on and so on ad infinitum,  I remember listening to my dad and his younger brother when they were in their mid eighties trying to out do each other with the number of tablets they were on.  I think at that time my Dad was on 17 a day!  Thankfully, not quite there yet apart from when my back and neck play up and I have to take the full amount of painkillers a day for a while.  shouldn't speak too soon but so thankful that I haven't had that happen for some time now.

    Have a lovely weekend.

  • Hi sidsmum, my wife and I are the complet reverse of you and your husband, my wife is on blood thinners, has an electric blanket on all year round, 15 tog quilt and 2 fleece blankets as well.

I'm always hot made worse by flushes quite often sleep in spare bed, usually with AC on.

My wife been on thiners for 30 years whereas I've only had flushes for 18 month's.

Not complaining we couldn't live without each other.
