Hi everyone,

My Oncologist wants me to start taking either Abiraterone or Enzalutamide to supplement the Decapeptyl I am currently taking.

It is my decision which one to take.

Has anyone else had to make this decision and how did it go?

Any pearls of wisdom greatly appreciated.

Take care all.

  • Hi Everyone, it is my first time writing on this site.,I am really struggling, my husband was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer April 2018.Sage T3B n1 mI Pelvic, para-aortic lymph nodes and bony metasteses PSA -55.he had 6 Cycles Docetaxel in August 2018 and has injections of zoladex since. He now has progression of the spinal cancer, extensive vertebral replacement with bony metasteses and the consultant is getting advice on possible surgery for stabilisation of the thoracic spine. He has been on Abiraterone for nearly 3 weeks and so far he has felt ok. Can anyone tell me how things have been for them in similar circumstances. We had great support from our local prostate cancer support group which has stopped since the pandemic, We have contacted Macmillan support for advice on other groups. I am crying most days and feel overwhelmed, I am recovering from laryngeal cancer, any wives out there need support, I would love to chat.

Thanks for the reply. I'm just wondering what difference it would make in spreading the medication out as opposed to all at once. Obviously the side effects will be the same? I'm on my 4th week of xtandi now. I have a meeting with my oncologist at the end of the month so I will put it to him. Thank you.

  • I'm not sure, I just got told all 4 need to be taken at once and the same time every day

  • Thankyou for the reply Paul, having read your profile ,I am so sorry you have been through so much at such a young age We are waiting on my husbands latest CT scan results to see if the cancer has spread further to lymph nodes and internal organs. It has already spread to his pelvis ,humerus and ribs yet his PSA is 3.1.at the moment. IT fills me with some positivity that you have had this procedure, my husband experienced back spasm and could not stand up just before xmas , they ruled out cord compression but have advised no heavy lifting, no playing golf, no travelling long distance. How are your wife and children coping ,our grandchildren aged 12 and 16 have coped well with our situation and our family are very supportive. Macmillan have been amazing. my husband has remained active throughout all this and we belong to a walking group regularly doing 5 or 7 miles. Thankyou so much for you reply, take care.

  • Hi All,

Had my review and chose to have Enzalutamide. The Consultant said afterwards that if they were to make a recommendation it would be that. Should be starting in a week or so.

Thanks everyone for their responses and support. This forum really makes a difference.

    Cheers

  • Ahh thank you, it's been a shocking time but that's life isn't it, we have to roll with the punches. My wife is in a much better place now but is still struggling as you can imagine, I know it is harder on my family than me. My eldest is 15 so is aware of everything as I wanted to be open and honest with him is return for him doing the same to me. I did not want him googling stuff and being upset alone, my youngest is 10 and she just knows that dad had a bad back, operation and has cancer and I'm doing well. We all have our bad days but usually there is at least two of us to support the others. Macmillan have been fantastic as have all the staff and consultants. Good luck for your husband's scan results, take care.
