Hi everyone,

My Oncologist wants me to start taking either Abiraterone or Enzalutamide to supplement the Decapeptyl I am currently taking.

It is my decision which one to take.

Has anyone else had to make this decision and how did it go?

Any pearls of wisdom greatly appreciated.

Take care all.

  • Hi Dave

Yes I to had that decision just over a year ago, I have what they call a heart murmur, not serious but after reading about the two treatments, I plumped for enzalutamide. Abiraterone had a lot of hype but their nearly both the same, the latter is a little more aggressive which swayed my decision.

Why are you being offered either of the two treatments ? Have you had PC for a while or is this the beginning of your journey? Either way there both excellent treatments like I’ve said ones just a little more harsh.

  • Hi Joe,

    Thanks for your reply.
I was diagnosed almost 11 years ago and had RT and been on second HT for a couple of years. Completed 6 rounds of Chemo last June but PSA is rising slightly again, currently about 4. Not sure if patient choice is normal. Being sent some data to help my decision.

ive gone through almost the same treatment, be it only five and a half years ago, I did the same as you, my PSA started to rise and I was put on enzalutamide the reasons I explained earlier, it’s holding at 6.2 bit high but when I was diagnosed it was 893, eleven years were you incurable? At the time or once treated put on surveillance.

  • I was G7 and T3BN0M0. Given RT with "curative intent". I spent about 3 years on no treatment and PSA undetectable but restarted HT about 3 and a bit years ago. My 6 cycles of Chemo were very tough with multiple side effects, ending with a trip to the ICU with Pneumonia & Sepsis.  Much better now, only a few small lingering issues.

sepsis seems to be one of the occurring things that happen with chemotherapy, as I was in hospital with it after my third session, the side effects are for some not to bad, for people like us kaboom, hair loss, brown nails, super high sweats, fatigue sleepless nights and more, not a great time, but if it meant keeping this thing at bay, I would do it again, my profile tells all my diagnosis.

  • Hi Dave .

I was started on Decepatyl back in August 21.

My meeting with my oncologist started me off on Xtandi (Enzalutamide) from the get go. She wanted to hit it hard and fast from the start before my radiotherapy. First month complete and my PSA is now 0.34 from 46.7 in 4 months so I'm very happy. No real side effects so far, just mild fitague and hot flashes.

    Good luck

  • Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. I think I have decided to choose Enzalutamide. Seeing my Oncologist in a couple of days. First in-person meeting for ages.

    Thanks everyone.

  • Hi Dave

regarding enza & abiraterone . Latest studies show slightly better effects with abiraterone not much but the downside is abiraterone needs to be taken with steroids which has its own side effects . The other thing is if you have enzalutamide and in case it doesn’t work u can move to abiraterone but unfortunately not the other way around . So may b enza may b a good choice to go for first . Best wishes

  • HI, Thanks for your reply. It does make sense. I'm seeing my consultant tomorrow.

    Cheers

  • How are people taking Enza? I take mine 4 times a day but have heard from other people that are taking them all at once.

Does it depend on what stage your at or just what your oncologist suggested?
