Food or Drink to avoid on Prostap 3

Hi All,

Sorry for the strange title but all will be clear.

First of all I hope that everyone has had a reasonable Christmas. Sadly mine was not the case, I had a great Christmas Day with my brother however after I went home I started to feel unwell. I went to bed thinking that I would sleep it off. That was not the case within half an hour I was dialing 999 because I was having severe chest pains. Within 10 minutes a first responder & an ambulance arrived. The paramedic then did an ECG of my heart and said it was working overtime so they needed to take me to hospital. On arrival at hospital another ECG was taken and a full set of bloods. After another 2 ECG’s a chest X-ray and another set of bloods the doctor came to the conclusion that I wasn’t having a heart attack but a buildup of acid in my blood and stomach. He has put me on a course of Omeprazole for 28 days.

Now here is the question, we had the traditional Christmas meal with a glass of beer and Christmas pudding for dessert.
Could any of those rich foods reacted with Prostap3 my last injection was on 9th November and next on due in February.

I am meeting my consultant on Thursday so I will obviously be asking her, but has anyone on Prostap 3 had to keep away from certain foods.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Tyler.

For the newbies who have recently joined my profile has everything about my case.

  • Hi,

No I was on Prostap over Christmas 4 years ago having my injection on about 12th December and had the usual Christmas indulgences and this didn't happen to me so I don't think it is necessarily the result of the prostap 3 injection.  Though, of course, it may be one of the rare side effects noted on the package insert?  They gave me this to read at my first injection but now cannot remember much.  Glad you are feeling better now.  Maybe someone can chime in with more info.  Hope your consultant can shed more light on this.

All the best and enjoy the rest of the holidays.

  • Hi freefaller,

    Thanks for replying.

I never received the notes when I had mine. I will certainly ask for them in February. The medication that the doctor gave me is certainly working. Unfortunately it makes me burp a lot without being able to give people notice. It’s obviously doing it’s job.

    Thanks again

  • Hi Tyler, like freefaller I was on PROSTAP 3 for more than two years and didn’t experience that particular issue, just hot flushes, fatigue and being emotional! I take omeprazole as I am on aspirin and naproxen and it stops stomach damage due to acid. Hope it doesn’t happen again to you.

  • It was something our surgeries did which amazed me as had never had this before with injections.  Hope you are better soon.

  • Hi

I’m no doctor, but I’ve been on prostap 3 for five years, I had chemotherapy, radiotherapy, although I don’t think either caused this, I suffer from acid reflux, I now take omeprazole daily, also I have a back up of gaviscon advance if I get an attack, this helps no end, I eat fairly normally, enjoy a cake the odd time, and a beer but just a can or two that’s it.
As I have gout, and diabetes plus a few other things. Avoiding foods and drinks is next to impossible, I would certainly ask your doctor see what they say, and ask about the omeprazole and gaviscon advance.
    Stay safe

  • Hi Joe,

    Thanks for this.

The doctor did mention Gaviscon but at 5 o’clock in the morning after spending 6 hours in A&E the only words you’re waiting to hear is you can go home now. I’m not knocking them because I know that I was on hourly observation, I fact my blood samples were taken 3 hours apart so I was being monitored carefully. It’s good to know that the two are not related. I don’t know if you have the same problem with Omeprazole but it makes me burp a lot. I know that it’s a good thing because it’s getting rid of all the trapped gases.

    Thanks again

  • Hi Tyler

I know only to well about long visits in hospitals ( I had kidney stones twice recently ) plus everything else that’s going on, I remember when I was first diagnosed and on hormone tablets, I woke up one morning, could barely breath, I thought ok this is it, never really bothered me, I phoned for and ambulance they did tests and asked why did I phone an ambulance my reply, I’ve never had incurable cancer before.

I don’t do the burp thing, wrong end, nothing I can do about it.
    stay safe

  •  On the advice of the GP practice nurse, I stopped all caffeine and alcohol immediately when getting my first Prostap injection of a 3 year course. I worked for me. Over the last year I have gradually reintroduced both and now drink coffee every morning and have one or two glasses of wine a month! I had my last Prostap injection in June this year and the other sid effects are slowly wearing off.

You can download the Prostap 3 Patient Information Leaflet here:

    I hope that helps.

Best wishes for a better 2022.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift.

  • Hi Seamus,

Many thanks for this. I don’t drink much alcohol maybe the odd glass every few months. However I do love my coffee from my Tasimmo machine.
I will download a copy of the information leaflet. I will try to cut down on the coffee, maybe just the first one in the morning.
