Hi all
Just having a discussion with my specialist nurse and doctor. I'm on Enzalutamide. My Doctor prescribed Evacal D3 but there is a warning that it should not be taken by cancer patients with Bone mets. I have some in the spine and they are well spread around the rest of my body. Adcal D3 does not carry this this warning. My PSA is low.
It seems likely that the safe option is to take Vit D only and then get the required calcium from a good diet. I just wondered if other patients had faced this dilemma?
Thanks
Arthur
I've been on Enzulatimide now for 6 months I think and started on Adcal D3 3 months ago when starting the bone strengthening infusions. I've spoke to alot of people who are on the same treatment, I'm sure the consultant would not prescribe supplements that compromised your condition

It's a badly worded warning. It would be better if it said "should only be taken under medical supervision" The point of it is if you have untreated bone mets, calcium from your bones will be entering the blood stream: even though your bones need repair, you could have excessive blood calcium, even without a supplement. A supplement on top would be dangerous.
But if you are being treated, and/or the mets are stable and under control, and/or at least your blood levels are being monitored - it's a different story. Your bones need repair, and the supplement can help if that's happening.
I hope that makes sense!

If I can't beat this, I'm going for the draw.
Meanwhile, my priority is to live while I have the option.
Thanks all for your replies and support.
I think this may be down to the pharmacy issuing Evacal rather than Adcal. Are they the same thing?
I've suggested that the Doctor prescribes Adcal D3 but I see what she says. Either way I do think I need a calcium supplement. I had a blood test this morning so no doubt that will tell the story of progress after 8 weeks on Enzalutamide. I'll keep you posted.
Good luck with your blood results, I had mine done today at St Helens hospital. Living on a 28 day cycle now, I'm back tommorow for my monthly zoledronic acid infusion and to get more enzulatimide. I'm not sure if the 2 calcium supplements are the same or not, you are doing the right thing questioning your consultant
