Hi just wanted to see how everyone gets on with the hormone therapy ? My dad has prostate cancer and secondary bone cancer he has been on hormone tablets for a month and had his first injection 2 weeks ago his psa is over 3000

the only effects to the cancer was pain in his hips but since the hormone treatment he isn’t eating and is sick everyday and has now got vertigo he has lost over a stone and is so tired and washed out I just wondered if this is common or if generally most people get on fine ? I keep ringing the GP who is lovely but whatever they keep prescribing doesn’t seem to help and he can’t keep the tablets down for more than an hour

just hoping he starts to feel better soon

Hi no not yet been a 6 week wait so only had gp and a urology nurse who gave first injection

  • Sorry to hear about that. It's not a common reaction to HT. Try calling the Macmillan nurses or the Prostate Cancer UK nurses. They are both very helpful.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift.

  • I’m on Decapeptyl 22.5 SR. Apart from ED, my only symptom is extreme fatigue. I think it’s very common. I wish him and your family well.

    Hi Cakni1965

So very sorry to hear about your Dad.

I am probably about 2-3 years ahead of your Dad in terms of my treatment and I'm therefore hoping I can add some positive news as I know how stressful the whole thing can be for both the patient and close family.

First of all, I would not see my GP about such specialised matters. My GP openly admits that he is not qualified to give advice on cancer treatments and this makes common sense. That is why they are called General Practitioners!  You really need to speak to the senior cancer nurse at your hospital as they are usually the link between you and the Oncologist.

I have been on hormone tablets for over 3 years but also take a steroid tablet as well which helps to alleviate the side effects affecting your Dad. Hormone tablets are notorious for their side effects but these can normally be managed. The most common is extreme fatigue and also swelling of the face, tum and feet. Gentle exercise, particularly walking, helps me enormously but quite clearly, your Dad is not yet in a position to even think about doing anything physical.

I am confident that things will improve for your Dad. The early days are often the worst ones but after 3 years of treatment, I now have a pretty normal life and have every intention of keeping that way for as long as possible.

Very best of luck and keep posting as you can learn a lot from this website.
