I know it’s a frightening time. You can only take things day by day. I was diagnosed at 50. I felt healthy before treatment started. Take things step by step, it’s the only way. Speak to specialist nurses, Macmillan prostrate cancer uk, anyone everyone.  The reason surgery is preferable  to younger men Is the longer term effects of radiation, 20+ years. 

what are your psa readings, Gleason score, biopsy results? If you’re being offered surgery they must be fairly confident it’s contained. It’s best to assume so, therefore there is every chance surgery will be a cure.  Yes there will be challenges but that is where we need to think day by day. 

I had surgery and within a 7 weeks was back at work, I work in an office.

Some more info would be useful, ie, Psa, Gleeson, what does the MRI report say about cancer location?

Surgery isn't the only option for you and in fact if u r stage 3/4 Radiotherapy maybe preferable.

This is very rarely true, and it's never surgery - especially if stage 3/4.
You need to know exactly where you are - your "TNM" stage is central to this (tumour / nodes / metastases).

You then need to hear from the surgeon AND the oncologist about your (probably several) options before making a choice. It may be that things point very much in one direction, but it's more likely that you'll need to look closely at the 'side effects' to see what you can live with best, as treatment outcomes don't vary a lot between treatment options.

It IS frightening, for anybody. But don't let it paralyse you. You need to be part of the process.
