Hello,
My dad had an MRI due to enlargement felt by urologist which came back showing enlarged prostate (benign). He then had a TURP procedure and they found cancer cells in the tissue they took for analysis.
We are a bit scared. He's having a biopsy today...so nervous about the results!
Anyone experienced anything similar to this?
I'm worried that the cancer has spread.
Thanks!
Emma
Hi Emma, sorry to hear about your dad.
Has he had a psa test?
As The MRI has only shown a benign enlarged prostate I doubt if it has spread.
Wait and see what the biopsy says , u should be given a Gleeson score, this will show the aggressiveness of any tumour present.
Let us know how it all goes
Best wishes
Steve
Hi Steve,
Thank you :)
He has had a PSA test (originally by the GP six months ago) which was slightly high (I think it was 5.5) so he was referred to the urologist who found the enlargement.
He had the biopsy yesterday so now just a painful wait for the results.
Do you know if it possible to have benign enlargement and cancer of the prostate or is it likely to be linked?
Yeah it was strange that the MRI came back clear so hopefully that's a good sign.. the MRI was about 6 months ago.
Many thanks again.
Will keep you posted. Do you know if it is likely my dad will get the results by letter?
Emma
Hi Steve,
Just to update you, my dad received his results yesterday. Which were better than we thought.
They have found a small amount of cancer in the remaining tissue from the biopsy, but I dont think the doctor wants to do anything yet as my dad is recovering from the TURP still (and the trauma of the news).
Maybe in 6 months he might have his prostrate removed/hormone treatment, but for now a PSA test in 3 months time will be able to tell us more.
Fingers crossed. So scary news but not as bad as we imagined at first.
I wondered if anyone else was undergoing active surveillance and what their experiences have been?
Regards,
Emma
Hi Emma
That's good news, Active surveillance seems like a good option at present but obviously monitor with continued psa tests etc.
I was on AS from 2013-2017, it went OK for me, in the end I had to agree to treatment as the tumour was getting larger and the psa was about 12.
So far everything Ok since treatment finished March 2017.
Best wishes
Steve
Hi Steve,
Very interesting. Do you mind me asking what your PSA was at the beginning?
So happy to hear all ok since your treatment has finished. One worry my dad has is if it will grow quickly (and then spiral out of control suddenly) but I know from the statistics that this is unlikely.
Thanks again and apologies for the delay in response.
Emma

My psa in Jan 2013 was just over 4 (no symptoms) up from about 2.5.
With a Gleeson of 6 and size of only 4mm it was obviously slow growing but it did grow and so had the RT in Feb 2017. Your comment about it suddenly growing quickly is unlikely assuming a lowish Gleeson and psa.
The reason I went on AS was worry about potential side effects which did happen but only lasted a few weeks.
So in retrospect I could have started treatment a bit earlier as the tumour was nesring the capsule edge when treatment started.
Probably the best advice is, don't let it get too near the border, monitor by regular psa and if possible MRI.
Best wishes
Steve
