After 8 courses of chemo my husbands psa has gone from 4.5 to 9.6 his scan shows the lesions in his ribs and spine have not increased. He is stage 4. What has caused this increase
Hello MalaMala
I am so sorry to read your post. There are many reasons for an increase in PSA after chemotherapy. As you have not completed your husband's profile I am unaware of any other treatments/medication he's on but here are 3 possible reasons-
* Some of the cancer cells may have become resistant to the chemotherapy drugs.
* There could be a "biochemical recurrence" where the cancer has spread but isn't showing on a scan - it may well show on a PSMA-PET scan.
* PSA surge syndrome - where the dying cells release PSA into the blood stream and cause a "spike" in the PSA readngs.
