Bowel problems on Decapeptyl?

Hello everyone,

I have been on Decapeptyl 22.5  with six monthly injections for three years and in the last few months I have been getting bowel problems. I had a severe blockage about three or four months ago and another blockage about three weeks ago. By ‘blockage’, I mean the body itself actively trying to move the stool but unable to do so. A very distressing experience.

I went to GP who only gave diet advice. I mentioned having cancer but he didn’t seem to see that as an issue (and hopefully that is indeed the case).

Anyway, I just wondered if anyone else had had any issues with constipation or blockages?

Hope everyone is keeping well.

Kind regards,

Nor

  • Hello

I've been on Decapeptyl 6 monthly injections for almost 4 years now and to be honest I am very regular. (My Metformin for type 2 diabetes also helps with this).

It's possible your GP isn't up to speed with prostate cancer medication, however I have had a look at the PIL (Patient Information Leaflet) and it lists constipation one of the RARE side effects and suggests you contact your oncology team who should be able to help.

Give them a call and please do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thank you for your kind reply Brian.

Yes, as you say, it is rare but it was just something I was trying to discount because I don’t know what else is causing this problem.

I will try the hospital and see if they have any suggestions.

Thank you again and  I’m glad you are doing well.

    kind regards,

    Nor.

  • My husband has had all sorts of bowel issues on Decapeptyl. The GP seems to be clueless, so he gets endless FIT tests and has now been tested for celiac, which was also negative.

It looks as though it comes with the territory.

  • I am so sorry to hear of your husband’s problems. Ansteynomad.

Whether my own problems are cancer related, or something else I honestly don’t know.

My local Practice seems disinterested and sadly it often feels as if I’m alone in this. I know a female friend who is on (male) hormone treatment who has had bowel issues (blockages) too and likewise her GP shows no interest.

I wish you and your husband well and thank you for your kind reply.

  • Hello

The Hormone Therapy can lead to type 2 diabetes or if you already have it, it can play havoc with your blood sugars.

About 6 months into my journey my blood sugars shot up and my diabetic nurse and my GP were unsure why and what to do. When I delved a little deeper it looks like at our GP practice (and it's a big group practice) - I was the first person on HT with blood Sugar issues - in the end it was a joint meeting with the GP/Me/Diabetic Nurse that sorted the issue out.

Most GP's are fine with "run of the mill" issues but don't specialise and sometimes "just don't know". You have to "lead" them a little.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello Brian,

    Thank you for that.

I am glad you are getting proper care.

Hopefully my issues will improve/settle down over the next few days.

    I appreciate your help.

    kind regards,

    Nor.
