Hello everyone,
I am a 61-year-old male that was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February. My urologist is a surgeon, so I decided on surgery without consulting with any other doctor's. I just want to know if I made the right decision. I will list the details below.
PSA one year ago 9.2
PSA now 7.4
Gleason score 6
Clinical stage T1c
5 out of 12 sites show cancer at 60%, 70%, 5%, 25%, and 5%
I did not consider radiation treatment since I have ulcerative colitis and am taking the drug Velsipity. I read online that radiation while taking Velsipity could cause skin cancer.
I just need advice. My surgery is scheduled in 2&1/2 weeks from now.
Did I make a decision too quickly and should I reconsider?
Thank you all for your help!
Were you offered active surveillance?
You have a very low grade cancer - indeed in some places a Gleason 6 is not considered cancer at all. It is likely to proceed very slowly indeed and in some cases you may not need treatment ever.
I also looked at the information about the drug Velsipity from its manufacturers. You can find what I read here:
https://www.velsipity.com/why-velsipity/side-effects-and-safety
It does not mention radiotherapy. It DOES mention skin cancer and taking precautions against UV radiation that is in sunlight.
You need an expert to advise you on this - so not me.
You can call Macmillan's Cancer Specialists on 0808 808 0000 from 08:00 to 20:00 7 days per week. They will be able to offer you more effective guidance and scientific basis than anyone here.
A prostatectomy is significant surgery and should not be undertaken without considering all the options available.
Let us know how you get on with your review.

Changed, but not diminished.
Hi gyver65 Like others on this forum I have no medical knowledge, just the experience of a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
However, for what my opinion is worth, I think you have done the right thing in at least postponing your treatment to do some more research.
I note your comments about your consultant seeming to push the surgery option, that is the exact opposite to mine at the same stage although he too was a surgeon. He forcefully instructed me and my wife to go away and discuss the options taking any advice and research that we cared to do. Then let the hospital know the outcome of our deliberations.
You are welcome to read my journey through the past three years in my profile by clicking on my avatar above, you will see that my numbers are just a little higher than yours. There have been trying times during these years but I don't regret my decision in the least.
