Hello everyone,

Has anyone experienced chest tightness/ difficulty breathing since being on Bicalutamide?

  • Hello

It's on the list of possible side effects:

    Treatments and drugs - Bicalutamide.

I would contact your team about this / If you can't speak to someone today you need to contact 111 for advice.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Brian

Thankyou, we have contacted our oncology team, dad currently in A&E and is being admitted. Just wondered if anyone else has experienced it as it wasn’t presented to us as a side effect. He hasn’t started any other treatment yet but has fluid on his lungs and a blockage in his kidneys. I’m worried that things seem to be progressing faster than we can manage, we haven’t even had a chance to discuss any treatment plans with the consultant yet.

  • Hello

Bicalutamide is often given for the first 28 days of a Prostate Cancer journey to stop an increase in PSA and a "flare". It's also used in some cases as part of Hormone Therapy. To be honest with you I have been on the group 4 years and dad is the first person I have know to experience this side effect.

I am not medically trained but fluid on his lungs and a blockage in his kidneys do not look to be other side effects (although if you read my journey it was my kidney function that got me here in the first place!).

At least he's being admitted to hospital and I hope they can sort out his issues and he makes a quick recovery. Do keep us advised of his progress.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Brian,

I’m wondering if it’s disease related then instead of hormone therapy related. Just had a read of your story and wonder if it’s a similar thing with the enlarged prostate crushing the other organs. I will chase this with the doctors.

thank you for your response it is very appreciated in these scary times. It’s all new to us so having the ability to talk to others is helpful.

    kind regards,

    Jade

  • Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give a further update since my last post- a lot has happened since then!

Dad was in for a week in AMU. They discovered that the chest pain was actually being caused by fluid on his lungs, atrial fibrillation and heart failure- a lot of information in one go. His heart rate was very high through admission ( going up to 170 at times) and blood pressure low. His ejection fraction is 16% which is also incredibly low. He has since been referred to the heart failure team. He never had any heart problems before so still not sure if this is a side effect of everything going on or something completely unrelated.

in himself, he seems more tired and quieter, I think he also has lost weight in his face. He has however resumed going back to work so this is something positive!

I wonder if anyone else has experienced anything at all similar ?

  • Hello Jade

Thank you for your update. I am so sorry to read about dad's condition and wish him a speedy recovery, although as you say, he's back at work.

I am sure others will let you know if they have had any of the conditions the have troubled dad - I am aware  has had AF so iv'e tagged him to this post and am sure he will add a message to the thread later.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • There is no connection in my mind between the side effects of the heart disease and the side effects of prostate cancer.

Im stage 4 and loving it. I have AF and the situation is made worse with a leaky mitral valve (that will not be fixed) so my occasional breathlessness is cause from heart issues.

The heart attack clinic is badly named because there’s no need for an attack to be looked after this crew. They are brilliant in my experience and the lungs and swollen cancels are all tied in to this condition.

    Does that help?

What I’m saying is that the two are separate in my view.

    Take care

  • Hi jade I now have a fib which to my knowledge I never had before the prostate journey any questions you have about a fib just fire away
