Hi
we had our first oncology meeting today - great news is that Pet scan showed no spread, so we were told it’s 3 years Relugolix and in a months time they are adding Abiraterone and a steroid.
We have another consultation for that, but wondered if anyone has experienced this combination (along with blood thinners, BP & Cholesterol medication for Atrial Fibrillation and stents.)
What side effects can we expect to encounter? Radiotherapy planned for 6 months time 20 sessions. John is Gleason 4-4, but only found in 2 of 18 samples at biopsy. He’s 69 and generally fit and keeps himself active with cardio exercises. Resistance workouts, walking and golf - plus we have reduced our alcohol consumption since diagnosis and I cook very healthy food.
Any recommendations to keep him as fit and healthy as we can during treatment?
Tracey
Hi Tracey,
I'm on a similar path since January. Please click on my name or avatar to see my profile for a full account of Relugolix, Abiraterone, RT and HT side effects and fitness planning.
I hope you find this helpful.
Wishing you and your husband well
David
Thank you David, your profile gives a really good account of what we can expect along the path, particularly like you, John is a similar age, does plenty of exercise and I look after the healthy diet. Thank you. ️
Hello
Let me share my exp with relugolox and abiraterone plus sterpid prednisolone.
I was on these meds from oct 2024 till oct 2025. While my psa and testo were well controlled one of the e side effects i felt within first month was hot flashes. Suddenly i would feel a hot flash coming on and it would last anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. The severity would vary, sometimes it would drench me with sweat, so much so that obwould have to change my clothes.
Another significant and obvious side effecr is loss of muscle tone, gain in belly fat as a result of depressed testosterone.
The best way to manage is firstly accept the side effecrs, eat healthy, and try your best to do strength training to maintain muscle mass. Ensure your protein intake is not less.
Thanks Warrior - he’s doing his strength training and eating well but is feeling fatigued later in day so rests when needed and I ensure a good healthy diet, just ordered him some calcium zinc & other multivitamin too so we’ll just hope for the best - going to our house in spain next month - aircon should help his hot sweats

Hello WifeyTracey
I had the bad hot sweats, however these were cured by taking sage tablets (Menoforce), although they don't work for everyone. If this doesn't work you can get a prescription for Medroxyprogesterone.
As with all supplements and "extras" you need to check with his team it's OK to take them as you can get a "medication clash".
Best wishes - Brian.

Hi Tracey,
To give you some hope, I know it's a lottery but so far hot flushes still negligible for me after after 10 weeks on this combo. Psa 0.2 so gives me heart to push through the fatigue. Hits me aroundpm but a variable nap reenergises me. Currently on safari in S Africa. Early morning game drives mean naps up to 2 hours, but hey, having a wonderful time! "This stuff isn't going to change how I live my life. Just how I feel (tired) while I'm doing it" Yoga and resistance training on my deck today. Stay strong
and push through.
David
