My partner finished his radiotherapy last Apr and has over the past 3 weeks having a burning sensation when having a wee, he spoke initially to his cancer nurse and they sent him to his GP, they sent a sample off and ruled out an UTI but gave him a course of antibiotics to take but was no change.
The GP is sending him for a PSA test next week as thinks the cancer may have come out the capsule.
But when I got the literature out, it seems like a delayed reaction to radiation cystitis, he doesn't have any blood in the urine.
Does anyone have any suggestions to relieve the burning symptoms, We are now trying to get his water intake up and I thought he could try the over the counter sachets I take when I get an attack.
Many thanks everyone.
Jane
Hi Jane, I understand that the RT can go on delivering for some considerable time after treatment, so it could be related. A delicate subject but is the burning internal or at the tip? My simple view would be the further away from the prostate the less likely it is RT damage but more likely a cut or sore. Either way, I would probably ask to see a urologist for a definitive view.
Best wishes, David
Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.
DJN I feel for your partner as I’m in a similar position after only 4 RT sessions.
I too have had my urine tested and I'm waiting for the results.
After reading elsewhere on the forum, I bought Cystopurin (potassium citrate) which is intended to reduce acid in the urine, which reduces that burning sensation. I received a consultant's OK before using it. Radiographers know all about it. It seems to help, but relief is not instant.
Hydration seems to be key to managing this condition. I'm finding it distressing and damn painful. I hope it eases for your partner and for anyone struggling with it.
All the best,
Chris
Hi DJN (Jane),
I finished my RT at the back end of 2023 & because of a prevalence to kidney stones try to drink at least 2 ltr of water a day in addition to any other fluids. Whilst this does mean a few extra bathroom visits, the regular flushing of the pipes has kept me free of any burning sensations, & I think the water is the key to this.
Hope your partner gets it sorted soon.
Best Wishes
Brian
