Radium 223

My partner is 69, diagnosed in July 2023  ~ Gleason 4 + 5: T3b: M1 with a PSA 30. Bone scan revealed multiple abnormalities involving the 6th rib, right iliac crest acetabulum and ischium together with the right femoral neck.

Originally on monthly Degarelix injections and recently changed to Prostap 3 monthly injection and daily apalutamide.  Had a course of 6 weekly radiotherapy in December 2024.

Was on Apalutimide for 14 months before it stopped working and went on the watchful wait for 10 months whilst the Cancer spread to more bones and the PSA levels started to creep up therefore 10 rounds of 3 weekly chemo was planned which started in November 2025.  This was stopped after 4 rounds last week as it was not working and PSA has raisen to 136 and a decision was made to try radium 223.  My partner is now currently waiting for the referral to start this line of treatment.   We’re trying to steer away from Dr Google and ask on here for real life true experiences.  What we’ve been told so far is that this new line of treatment will only help the bones.   Once my partner starts on radium 223

  • will the disease quickly spread elsewhere
  • will he feel better than he did on chemo
  • now the treatment for chemo has stopped will the spread of the disease speed up

Thank you in anticipation for your response.

  • These are questions I could have written myself  ,

I seem to favour a wait and see for a while, while I recover from the chemo which didn’t help me. Radium is a suggestion for me to ponder, but all I want is some peace.

I’ll watch for answers with you and hope for inspiration.

    Good luck.

  • Hi Virgo Babe, if you use Google selectively should take you to some comprehensive info on CRUK Site.

    Good luck, Dave

  • Hello

I did a search of the Community for you to see if I could come up with any threads where Community members talk of their experience with Radium 223 - but drew a blank. I did come up with this question posed in "Ask A Nurse"

    Radium-223-before-cabazitaxel-for-advanced-prostrate-cancer.

That's not to say we don't have Community members with this experience - they might not have posted anything.

It is possible you may find someone with experience of this treatment and a true life experience on the Prostate Cancer UK Community and here's the link you need:

Prostate Cancer UK - Online Community.

I wish your partner well with this treatment.

    Best wishes - Brian.
