This was prescribed to manage bone pain for advanced metastatic prostrate cancer and also because my PSA has not particularly responded to Docetaxel.

Do you have views on doing Radium before more chemo with Cabazitaxel and what are the pros and cons in terms of disease progression and bone pain?

  • Dear Sussex20

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community, I hope you find it supportive.  My name is Gillian and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to read you are experiencing bone pain and have not had the desired response to your Docetaxel chemotherapy treatment.

When there is a reduced response to docetaxel based regimens Cabazitaxel is then considered as a secondary option.

Radium-223 is also a treatment option for men whose prostate cancer has spread to the bones and is causing pain. This is called advanced prostate cancer or metastatic prostate cancer. Radium-223 will only be an option if your cancer has stopped responding to your first hormone therapy. Radium-223 helps some men to live longer, it can also help to reduce bone pain. Most men who have radium-223 get some pain relief from it. We would suggest you discuss this treatment further with your healthcare team if you have concerns about the timings of the regime.

Living with advanced prostate cancer can be really challenging emotionally as well as physically, we are here to support you in any way we can, I have linked some of the support we can offer here. Prostate Cancer UK also offer support for people living with Prostate cancer.

I can see you have joined our online community I hope you find sharing you’re experience with others a good support.

I hope this information is helpful.  You can always call one of our nurses directly if you want to talk over your concerns or require any further support.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you for this. Do you know at what stage I might also be able to move on LU177 treatment (assuming self funding)?

  • Hi Sussex20,

Thanks for getting back in touch with us. My name is Amy, and I am one of Gillian’s colleagues.

I would encourage you to discuss the timing and suitability of accessing 177 Lutetium PSMA therapy with your consultant.

This treatment is currently under review with NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) regarding a decision on whether this will be NHS funded in the future. The consultation is due to close this week and results will follow in due course.

Prostate Matters has a list of NHS and private hospitals offering 177 Lutetium PSMA therapy you may find useful.

Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you have any more questions.

    Best wishes,

Amy C, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
