Constipation preventing RT marking

2 days ago I went for my scan and marking appointment prior to starting prostate radiotherapy, but constipation in the colon prevented a clear "view" to set the markers. I was sent away with laxatives and a new appointment made 7 days later.

Nothing much has changed yet and I'm worried I'll still have the same problem when I go back for the second scan.

Has anybody else experienced this, and any suggestions on how I can try to resolve this problem?

Sorry if too much information, but that's the way it is!

  • I went private for a sigmoidoscopy and was sent Picolax to take to clear my bowels and intestines.

It worked dramatically and effectively Smile!

  • Hello

If the same issue presents at your next planning scan the Radiotherapy team should be able to prescribe medication to resolve the issue.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello  . Yes, I had the same issue first time. I was expecting to use the self-enema to prepare for the scan but, due to mild haemorrhoids, was told I couldn’t use that so had to ‘self-prep’. Did that, had the scan, but the planner told the CT team my bowel still was still too full and I was sent home with the new tattoos but a little deflated, if that’s the right word.

Before the second attempt I treated myself to some Cosmocol / Laxido-type powder for a few days, which made all the difference. The ultrasound showed my bladder wasn’t quite full enough second time so had to wait in the CT room for a few minutes while that filled up, the planning scan then went ahead without any issues.

The powder takes a bit of trial-and-error to work out how much to use. 2/3 of a packet was enough for me!
