Choosing Treatment

Hello all.

I have an appointment to see an Oncologist on the 27/01/26. To then decide on surgery or HT/RT. I am going for the latter. The amount of tissue that will have to be removed with surgery, In the words of the consultant I saw. Will leave me incontinent & suffer ED for the rest of my life. Prostate, Seminal Vesicles, Nerves & Lymph Nodes. He half said it would be better having HT/RT. In his words if I opt for surgery I will still have to go through RT, & perhaps HT. I am 58 years old.  I think the surgery option is too much to ask of my body. Soon I'll be upping my gym time to 3 sessions per week. Mostly resistance training to put on as much mass as possible. I just do not want to be incontinent for the rest of my life. I have not yet shed any tears over this very recent diagnosis, Dec18/2025, although I expect I will at some point.

Thanks

  • Welcome to the dreadful club of dilemmas. You are very young  and will recover from surgery well but the RT and HT are seemingly the better choice but that’s up to you. I’ve had HT and chemo so I’m not the best to advise.

    Good luck

  • Hello Hutch

I can't really comment on your choice of treatment as you don't have any diagnosis details on your profile. (To add there on your home page click on the chair - top right, then profile and then edit. Once you have written something don't forget to save it).

I can fully understand your treatment choice - and you do need to be aware of the side effects of HT/RT (fatigue and ED being the main ones). I went down the HT/RT route and you can read my journey bu clicking on my name or avatar.

I wish you well moving forward. Happy to answer any questions you may have.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • It’s a lot to take in. I was given my diagnosis on 22 December. It did feel like I was there to decide on surgery or RT there and then. It felt too big a decision to be made on the spot.

If you feel like sharing your diagnosis it will help people to share like experiences more inline with yours. Maybe you can take a bit more time to decide. Either option has benefits and downsides.

I opted to defer my decision in the post MDT appointment, then week. I asked if I arrived back in one year would my outcome, if I chose RT, be significantly worse. Not significantly was the likely result so I am on active surveillance with the first retest on 24th February. I don’t fancy surgery either.

  • Hi.   I had surgery in Aug. if you’ve any questions about it , drop me a line and I’ll try and help.   Cheers.  Simon
