Hi
I have recently see the surgeon who advised me that I would have to lose 15 off my BMI and that radiotherapy would be the better option.
I then spoke with the oncologist who said I should try and lose the weight and go for surgery. He said I would need 3 months of hormone therapy before radiotherapy if I chose that route.
Well im on a nhs weight loss programme but fast loss is not the goal!
I am considering asking doctor for monjaro to lose the weight quicker but I know it effects cancer treatments.
I am not sure who to speak to first .
I felt totally shocked that after surgeon said radiotherapy that oncologist left me hanging..
In all honesty I has decided radiotherapy was my first choice and expected that to be suggested.
Hello BP55
A warm welcome to the group, although I am so sorry to find you joining us.
I am a T3a (T3aN0M0) and wasn't given the choice of surgery - my PSA was 182 so my team assumed it had spread and I was placed on HT from day 1 (you can read my journey bu clicking on my name or avatar).
Nearly 5 years down the line I am back on HT (after 3 years HT/RT). I put on 3.5 stone in the first 3 years and now I am back on HT my Consultant has put me on Ozempic to ensure I lose weight and not put any more on (my BMI was 36 I think).
The way HT /RT works is the HT puts the cancer to sleep by reducing it's food (testosterone) and the RT kills off the cancer cells. RT works best after 3-6 months of HT.
It's a hard choice and personally I would look at the pros and cons of each treatment and the possible side/after effects as to how they would affect you (and any partner). I am happy with my treatment and I didn't have a choice but with a PSA of 182 surgery would have been too much of a risk.
Feel free to ask any questions, nothing is to trivial.
Best wishes - Brian.
