Robotic Prostatectomy- an experience

So, I am post-surgery now, it was Friday 12 December.

After two nights in hospital, the second due to producing too much urine output. I got a relatively good sleep last night, disturbed only by needing to check my catheter and bags were working.

I did have some little challenges.

Nearly 30 mins in the anaesthetic room because veins couldn't be found and then my BP was too high, possibly due to stress of being so long in that phase.

Night one my night bag filled and I suspect i experienced something like urine retention. The pain was intense I was shaking and grabbing the bef rails. As soon as the night bag was emptied,  I had almost instant relief. Patient in the bed opposite had same experience at same time, so maybe a bag check was missed.

Post surgery day 1 when I was allowed up, my right knee wouldn't work. The evening before it went numb and that spread to thigh. It was so odd. It was back when I started to walk but with time and support from physio team,, I kept going and the knee went back to normal.

Was ready for release after one night, everything was good, bloods, sats and BP, but I mentioned id emptied my day bag six times. I was producing 500 ml an hour.

Monitored for a second night, then a fluid chase with a drip, until the drip was too be changed and my canula came out. My right wristband suddenly felt tight and my arm and hand below the elbow were like Big Red's from Hellboy.  Fluid had been going into arm not my vein.

Any, elevated and before a new canula could be fitted the consultant was round on his morning review and he decided I could come home as the appernt over production of urine was down to me drinking 3 litres of water in very short time.

So here I am. A little sore but glad it is over, or that phase is over.

The urology team were excellent and I felt so supported throughout the little challenges.

Onwards and upwards.

  • Hello

Well, at least the hospital team have looked after you - now the hard work to get back to the "new normal" begins. I can't give you any advice as I still have my prostate but I wish you well on your recovery.

Do please continue to let us know how you get on as everyone has a different experience and these all build up to help others with the important choice of which treatment to have.

    Best wishes - Brian.
