Countdown to surgery

So, after my urgent referral right back on 28 July, my robotic prostatectomy is scheduled for Friday and I have to be at hospital for 11:30am for a 1pm kick-off.

Hoping I will only be in hospital one night.

First GA as an adult so a little nervous, though all my reading suggests the drugs used surpress brain activity and any sense of time so most folk go out like a light and to them, next thing they are coming round.

Less anxious about wound and catheter care as will take each challenge one step at a time.

Hopeful of a good result, though an 8-12 week wait for histology results and 12-weeks for first PSA seems a long way ahead.

Stage 2 only with cribriform features (hence need for surgery) so the outlook is hopefully more sunny.

  • Hi Matthew, I had my surgery in April this year. Same as you, first ever operation. When I went into the anaesthetist room, 3 of them got to work on me straight away. We were chatting away when the anaesthetist said the GA was going in. For what felt a long time, nothing was happening. Then felt my left arm go a bit tingly. Next thing, I'm waking up in the recovery ward. Didn't even feel I was going to sleep.

Had a bit of trouble sleeping through the night as I got a splitting headache as tge GA wore off. Main problem was the fella in the next bed could snore for England Grimacing. Tip - take some ear plugs or headphones.

Blood pressure dropped a bit next day but was OK for me to be sent home at 4pm

Catheter care is what it is. 10 days was long enough for me.

Recovery from the operation itself couldn't have been better. Hardly needed pain relief.

    Best of luck for Friday

  • Good luck for your op.  I have mine booked in for the new year.  I had my biopsy under GA.  Like you first time under GA and I was a little nervous but the anaesthetist told me when they'd injected the anesthetic and said I should think of somewhere nice instead of the hospital.  Well, I hadn't even got to the thinking stage before I was out.  Woke up in the recovery room being offered tea and biscuits.

  • Hi Matthew.  I had my op Aug 20 and after being anxious ( scared ) it went well.   I woke  in the recovery room and asked if I had had to op yet.   I was in hospital 2 night as I had a bad reaction to some morphine which tbh I didn’t really need.  When you get home , you will feel tired and I know it’s a cliche but listen to your body.   I slept about 2 days off and on and didn’t leave my bedroom    After that I did a little bit of moving about each day and by about 5 days was walking up and down the garden.   The catheter is annoying but it is what it is and you soon get used to it.  I had a district nurse come on about day 7 to removed my staples     You will be fine trust me.   I had my post op appointment 10 weeks later and had an undectable psa with negative margins    The worry before the op is far worse than the actual procedure.   It’s a big day for us but remember, for the surgeon it’s another day at the office and they are well planned for it all.    Good luck.    Keep us updated.
