Hello

my dads had radiotherapy for prostrate cancer which finished in September he’s on hormone treatment and his latest psa was 0.2 so all being well it’s working

but recently he’s become concerned about a bit of bowl leakage

it isn’t all the time , but sometimes he can feel moist and when he wipes there is mess there

he’s quite embarrassed so read up and seems to think he can get tablets for this

there’s never any blood or pain but he’s quite a clean proud man so he’s concerned

Iv made an appt for Monday but just wondered if anyone had had similar issues

sorry  a bit graphic

any help would be appreciated

thanks Lesley

  • I recognise this.

I have the same symptoms, although perhaps slightly less than you outline. Like you I have been looking into the problem.

It seems to me that I should look at my diet first - I eat quite a bit if fibre, so maybe I should eat a little less healthily for a few days!!

Also it seems that the dreaded Pelvic Floor Exercises can help - back to the Squeezy App for me.

If neither of those work then, like you I might head for the GP. I will try everything else first though, because suppositories are not my favourite thing.

I hope your dad gets to grips with his difficulty, because it does seem it is regarded in medical circles as a pretty minor effect.

    Changed, but not diminished.
  • Hi Steve

thank you very much for the reply

it would seem it’s very likely a result of the radiotherapy. And I shall

pass on your advise and get him to look at his diet

I suppose it’s a small price to pay if it saves lives

thank you wishing you all the best and I hope you find something that helps you too

    best wishes

  • Hi Les lesley I no exactly what your  talking about I have the same thing, the thing is I had it well before I had my radiotherapy I've not been to the doctor as it only happens to me if I'm hot I did research it the only thing I found is that the Americans call it swamp arse (true honestly)

  • Hi  , this sounds remarkably like me for the last 8 years.  I can usually tell when it is happening and find a loo for a ‘freshen up’.

    Best wishes, David

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • Hi David

thank you very much for the reply

I think it maybe something he has to learn to live with

    all the best x

  • Hi mace

    thank you for replying

actually I had heard that term before haha

it must just be one of those things after treatment

    take care

    keep safe Lesley

  •   , I think putting up with it all depends on how bad it is.  In my case, I am able to recognising the signs and can usually sort things out.  If it is bad, then a chat with the GP may be in order.

  • Good to know it’s not only me   and others…! I suspect the slight increase in mucus which my bowel seems to be producing post-RT isn’t helping and the sphincter (is that the right word?) is maybe not completely sealing again for a short while after a No2. I read haemorrhoids can also cause this. Might be an age/wear thing too. Mine is fortunately quite short-term and not every day at the moment, so it is manageable. As  says, starting Kegels again and changing diet slightly may help. It does seem contrary to the usual ‘eat lots of fruit and veg’ advice.

  • Hi there

thank you for replying I will pass the comments on to my dad who is very grateful

I think a look at his diet will be a good idea too

although unlike me he does eat quite healthy

    thanks again

    best wishes to you

  •   , without too much detail, I strongly advise if he ever gets a bad tummy to head for some adequate protection (particularly overnight)!
