Hi all a friend of mine starts radiotherapy therapy early next year and has had some gold peices injected into his prostate, apparently this is a new treatment and is more accurate than the tattoo system I had I just wondered if anyone on here has had this done , selfishly I'm a bit miffed I never got this lol although I will be eternally grateful for the excellent care I did get

  • Hi Mace

I thought that the tattoos and gold markers went together, am sure that's what I had in 2017

    Steve

  • Hi Steve my friend had the gold peices put in but I'm sure he did not have the tattoos

  • Mmmmmm, perhaps someone can shed some lightThumbsup

  • Hopefully I'm curious now

  • Actually I had gold markers inside the prostate gland and just 3 marks on the skin outside, perhaps that does not count as tattoos

    Steve

  • I have the 3 marks but I'm sure I never had the gold peices but some of it is a blur now to be honest

  • Hello Steve (

As they say - your wish is my command.

The gold markers (or actually gold cylinders) are called "fiducial markers". Before your treatment they implant 3/4 markers in the prostate guided by ultrasound and then like RT with tattoos the first rotation of the RT machine lines you up so the RT is accurate.

From my understanding you have the markers or tattoos. (personally I had 3 tattoos and of course this is less invasive than the markers).

I would assume that the markers give more accurate positioning, although even with 3 tattoo's one radiologist used to put a big felt tip arrow on my body.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Ok Brian , thanks for explaining that, I do remember the gold markers going in cos nearly as bad as biopsy although only 3 markers.

Then I think they scribbled something on my flesh but difficult to remember as 2017.

Anyway looks like one or other

    Thanks

    Steve

  • Yes Steve ( you are right, they are inserted the same way as the biopsy samples are taken with a local or even general anesthetic.

I will stick with my tattoos - thank you.

    Best wishes - Brian.
